Practical advice for business start-up, in Ghana. All super low-cost to start!
But, do not forget, you have to plan every major step! Start by reading, watching videos about the business - the processes, in particular.
There may be externalities associated with the business. You do not want to make Ghana worse. For instance, what will you do with the soapy water from the laundry service that is harmful to the environment, if not properly disposed?
But tutoring has little of that negative thing.
You may want to start by registering the company, before you leave your "quagmire of despondency abroad," the "Burger" addiction, so to speak.
Good food for thought!
Our thanks to Mr. Stephen Atta Owusu!

Business models are patterned on some key “demand & supply conditions”, but also on national, community or local needs as the author has identified some of them in Ghana. Other factors may be location, start-up capital, marketability (will the service or product be needed), advertising, packaging, pricing, competition and above all "customer service—during and after sale or service."
Well, the one I’m going to suggest may not be all that attractive business, but as we all know Ghanaians are well known for FUNERALS and they spend tons on the dead, instead of the living, everyday. Therefore, anything dealing with funerals in most parts of Ghana such as; funeral homes, burial vehicles (hearse), funeral clothes, drinking spots (bars—for funerals and sports), etc., could be good money making outlet.
Next idea is "student hostels" for the ever growing tertiary institutions in Ghana. Build them where the schools are, fit them with computers, stores for educational materials and some grocery items, mini restaurant, a Gymnasium, and anything that students would need to help them live and study comfortably.
Lastly, I will suggest properly located “guest houses” with swimming pools, Internet facilities, etc., and “night sports” such as discotheques (discos) to take care of the booming younger generation and middle-age folks.
As I indicated in my subject field, some businesses can be profitable, although may not seem attractive to get into—like funeral homes, which I will not get into myself, but others are doing it anyway!! Good Luck, though.

...that will definitely start from the seaports where you have to go to claim your stuff from.
Every Tom, Dick and Harry who is in any relevant post or position will do everything in his/her power to 'extract' something from you or the delay tactic will be unleashed in its fullest bloom.
The frustrations just don't end at the ports. Once you are able to get your stuff from the ports, you will have to deal with the cops on the highways and roads to your destination. Every single police check point smells a 'payday' once they see all stuff/equipment coming from the ports.
Believe me...been there.... done that.
I was so frustrated the last time I tried to get a business set up in Ghana that if I had a gun, I would have shot somebody which would have landed me in a heap of trouble. I thanked God that I did not have a gun in my possession and swore never to go through that again.
This is a good article... no two ways about that.
But until some kinda laws and regulations are put in place by the government to make things a little bit easier and less frustrating for setting up businesses like laundry and car rental, I for one, will pass.
It's not for those of us who get frustrated easily.
Officials in Ghana live off frustrating people from overseas who want to do something good in our homeland.
Anybody who doubts what I'm saying can find out by himself/herself the hard way.

The opportunity is there and the ideas are great but the issue is that everyone from the ports to the landlords will try to cheat you. Moreover, we cannot forget about the people you will have to employ who will create an eventual problem along the way. Inability to have trustworthy staff leads to a limitation on how far you can rise.
On the customer side, the problem in Ghana is that the customer wants your goods or services but is not willing to pay what is necessary so in the beginning you might end up operating at a loss because you are selling or providing services just to keep yourself active and out there.
In sum, you do need HUGE sums of start up money as a cushion for what could be about two years of really slow business.

THREE (b): An agency of caregivers for the elderly, bedridden, etc. Either live-in or live-out.
Typically maids or relatives play this all-important role, but what is really needed are professional agencies that can provide fairly educated individuals with sufficient knowledge about health matters.
Too often, maids mishandle medication and fail to spot subtle warning signs about developing illnesses.
One can have a tumor the size of a watermelon growing on the forehead yet these maids would tell you "she is very fine" (which in Ghana probably means "she is not dead").

Acheampong you made my day by mentioning relatives as a factor of failure in business at home. I had chair and canopy hiring business and entrusted it in the hands of unemployed nice. I asked her to divide the money into two parts and use one part for her upkeep and keep the rest in my bank accounts so that we can expand the business. I am now reporting that after two years the only thing I hear is a lot of insult as a wicked uncle. I gave her one of the keys to one of my rooms for her to keep the items. There is a bed in the room and she used the room as a motel where people bring their girl friends and she sleeps with men there. If you want to make interest on you money, keep it in your bank accounts and be sure the value of the dollar is rise more than the profit you will make running business in Ghana.

Your business ideas were first set on the premises of;
. No need for capital
2. No need for education (maybe a minimum of Junior High Level)
but all the ideas you have listed require quite a substantial amount of capital (monetary on non-monetary). On that basis, the whole article is flawed, but you have still made a good presentation of the various business opportunities available for anyone to venture.

Good afternoon,
My name is Stephanie Pierre. I am writing in regards to my interest in starting my business in Africa. Ghana, to be precise(open for considerations). I'm from Haiti, currently residing in the states. I am not someone that enjoys working for others. I have an interesting background in sales and customer service of which i've exceptionally been able to make a living for the past years, however, i am not fond of working the basic 9-5 jobs here. In doing so, I've decided that it's time for me to be my own boss, only thing is i do not know what kind of business to open .
Reading your article has narrowed it down to a few ideas i believe may survive. However, it still leaves me in a wide loop considering that i've never been to the continent and have no idea how or where to commence.
any idea or advice would be greatly appreciated.
you can reach me at 407-371-5648 directly or on whatsapp.
Look forward to hearing back from you soon.
