I thought for once that Kofi was going to criticize Emile Short's opinion that the state's appeal against Woyome will fail which I concur with but it turned out to be his suggestion of decoupling.Perhaps Mr Short is talking of amending the constitution to effect that decoupling.
Of course all democracies rest the appointing authority on the elected President with constitutionally safe guards and established bodies like the council of state to effect the necessary checks and balances to give the president the necessary advice on his appointments. In a democracy the buck stops with the president and he is sorely held accountable when something goes wrong and the people will judge him at the end of his tenure.I wonder how that can be possible under the Emile Short suggestion and formula unless we have elected officers for some of these appointments.
Otherwise with a government majority, their preferred office holders will always prevail. But the Emile Short formula will also mean a major constitutional amendment to bring about that change and that must be weighed against the conventional wisdom of the major democracies.Perhaps the tried and tested formula which we presently adopt must be made more effective to absorb the shocks of interference.

It also reminds me of the time when NDC was in power at the beginning of the 4th Republic. The other side of the political divide, questioned why DCE were not elected and promised that when they came to power, DCE would be elected. Well, 8 years of the Kuffour administration came and went and we never heard about that again.
It makes me wonder what is really at play here.

Kofi, thanks for this candid and illuminating piece! You hit the nail on the head when you point out the disdain many garrulous radio commentators, including EMile short have been showing this president in total disregard to the constitution. I am totally shock that MR Short and others give so much power to socalled civil societies; we often do not know the people for whom these socalled civil societies speak for. President Mahama has suffered enough Opprobrium but the NPP and other oppositions parties must be careful in embracing the recommendations; it will not be long but the will find them not so palatable. The EC commissioner that is always appointed by the executive has been up in the air with manner of calls for the president to consult civil societies? What clearly is at issue here is a disdain for this president and its good that you have pointed this out.
