I have enjoyed the review by Valerie. It comes from someone who was there in the thick of things. That has nothing to say what Valerie is saying here is the honest above board objective truth. Much of the writeup here is reducible to "he says she says", you and I were not there in the thick of things. It is all perpectives, opinions and some so-called facts tagged on to press forward the author's opinions. I wonder whether Valerie Sackey has written her own memoirs. If she hasn't done so already, she must do so with great hurry. Posterity begs her to do so. All of us wish that the people who were there in those crazy days will write their memoirs without let or hindrance. Especially I can't wait to read Rawlings' own memoir. We need a map into the mind of that monster.
We have heard two versions of why Rawlings staged the coup to oust Limann, but I am still somewhat not convinced. When will Rawlings and his co-coup makers open up? They alone can tell us the reason why they took arms to oust Limann. I also find Valerie's account on Arkaah as underhanded. That a whole vice-president only went to meetings feeling like a scared kid and never engaging in the deliberations but to take notes. Nonsense! If what Valerie has painted of Arkaah has any truth to it, then that must be seen as an indictment of the whole monster house that Rawlings ran, cowarding and intimidating a whole vice-president.

I was very active in organising the students at Legon to support the June 4th uprising and got to learn a lot first hand. One reason I didn't join in the support of the 31st Dec. coup despite the disenchantment with the Limann regime.
Valerie is of course right about Adu Boahen not being the one who first used the phrase "culture of silence"; JJ did. Adu Boahen simply threw back the alleged cause to JJ in his British Council address, claiming that JJ himself was responsible for the culture of silence.
Yes, that was when Adu Boahen also claimed Prof. Akilagpa Sawyer, a Ga who was made Vice Chancellor instead of him by JJ, was an Ewe, and thus accused JJ of tribalism against him, the singular "mistake" of JJ which turned Adu Boahen against him. Adu Boahen, the records show, wrote positively about JJ and the June 4th Uprising and no doubt would have remained so had he been appointed VC.
And Obed Asamoah must indeed be blamed for the attempt to impose incumbents on unwilling constituencies. He was nearly beaten up, except for Police protection, in the case of Cmdr Sowu by the people of Anlo, who went on to vote for Gheho who stood as an independent.
Btw, did Obed also write about the 100 million old cedis stolen from his house by his two Police guards?

Disposition and hostility towards Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan appear to be deep-seated,or should I say hereditary! I have often wondered about what this austere academic had really done to deserve all the venom and scorn which have been directed at his person and integrity.
Even when he had supervised an election which catapulted it to power, the broad cross-section of Party[and I disagree with Dr. Sackey that the disrespect meted out to Dr. Gyan, was the work of a bunch of hoodlums,or a fringe element] bas had cause to treat him[the EC Chairman] with such disdain and contempt!
No wonder, many of their members cannot accept the fact that they lost the 2008 election, which they figured was going to be a 'coronation' of sort, and the very recent 2012 ballot which it also lost, ignoring that fact that you cannot come to power through the back-door!

This is really really interesting reading not because it is telling the truth (it many not) but because it is coming from an insider. It should be a must read for anyone interested in the affairs of our country especially in its recent years. And so must Obed's book. It will contain things that may interest others in ways for which the present reviewer may not be interested.
Now I want to read Asamoah's book and see things FOR MYSELF.
But Valerie Sackey has gone native (what do you expect when she's been living in our country for so long?). There is no reason to always refer to Obed Asamoah as "Dr". The fact that he has a PhD from some university somewhere does not mean he will tell the academic truth. That one has to be judged by readers whether they, themselves, have a PhD or not.

And Jake's mum is white too. As for me I remember reading Percy Appiah's books in secondary school. That good woman from solid British stock married Joe Appiah (one time Ghana's roving ambassador) and mothered Anthony Appiah.
Kwame Nkrumah also had a British lady as his private secretary.
Rawlings reverses the trend. It's his father who is British.
Thank goodness, we are a people who welcome and adore people from other races. Too bad some of us rather turn to vent our hatred on our fellow citizens who only happen to come from another tribe.

The side commentary are breath-taking for a piece that is supposed to be a review of a book by another person.
We are thinking Dr. Obed Asamoah maybe took on too much, for an individual. As you know, in the US and elsewhere, some of the "authors" do not actually write the story themselves, particularly when it has to do with politics and facts must be carefully checked.
A Team from the publisher carefully vet facts/data, before publication.
Imagine if after putting it all together in a draft, Dr. Obed Asamoah had carefully selected a small team to assist with the fact check!
Still, YES, the book will be worth reading!
But your, "... Afterall, even Sarfo Adjei calls himself Dr..."

We dare say, forgiven: An OMNIBUS books breed as OMNIBUS review!
Seriously, we really would like to know this!
READ: "...I arrived in Ghana in March 1959, a few days after Independence, and was met at the airport and driven to Kumasi by Victor Owusu, a relative of my new in-laws. My knowledge of politics in Ghana was therefore very limited by the anti-Nkrumah opinions which I was fed by my in-laws and at first I was too busy adjusting to a new life, teaching and raising a family, to question what I was told. It took a few years to make my own observations and form my own opinions..."
OUR QUESTION: We are assuming this statement is coming from our Book Reviewer, Ms. Valerie A. Sackey, not the author of the book, Dr. Obed Asamoah.
This rather very detailed report looks like in part, an effort to answer/challenge, some of the "facts" presented by the author. In that sense, the report is an interesting read.
READ: "...Dr Asamoah rightly points out that the well-worn phrase “Culture of Silence” was not the invention of Professor Adu Boahen, but was first used by Rawlings as early as 1984 at a rally in Conakry, Guinea..."
OUR COMMENT: We are afraid we have another case of a "J. B. Danquah Invention Syndrome" (JBDIS), pronounced (Jab-Dis, as in when you Jab as if you Care, then Dismiss at the same time).
But seriously, the "Culture of Silence" is NOT a Rawlings invention. Rawling is not the first to coin/use/promote the concept.
READ:
Culture of silence, according to "Paulo Freire":
"...First published in Portuguese in 1968, Pedagogy of the Oppressed was translated and published in English in 1970. The methodology of the late Paulo Freire has helped to empower countless impoverished and illiterate people throughout the world. Freire’s work has taken on especial urgency in the United States and Western Europe, where the creation of a permanent underclass among the underprivileged and minorities in cities and urban centers is increasingly accepted as the norm.
Years before he was “invited” to leave his homeland after the military coup of 1964, Freire had begun devoting his life to the advancement of the fortunes of the impoverished people of Brazil. After his twenty-year exile he moved first to Chile, then emigrated to the United States before returning to Brazil. In the course of his work and travels, and as a result of his studies in the philosophy of education, he evolved a theory for the education of illiterates, especially adults, based on the conviction that every human being, no matter how “ignorant” or submerged in the “culture of silence” is capable of looking critically at his world in a dialogical encounter with others, and that provided with the proper tools for such encounter he can gradually perceive his personal and social reality and deal critically with it. When an illiterate peasant participates in this sort of educational experience he comes to a new awareness of self, a new sense of dignity; he is stirred by new hope.
“We were blind, now our eyes have been opened.”
, the system of dominant social relations creates a 'culture of silence' that instills a negative, silenced and suppressed self-image into the oppressed. The learner must develop a critical consciousness in order to recognize that this culture of silence is created to oppress.[11] A culture of silence can also cause the "dominated individuals [to] lose the means by which to critically respond to the culture that is forced on them by a dominant culture."[12]
Social domination of race and class are interlaced into the conventional education system, through which the "culture of silence" eliminates the "paths of thought that lead to a language of critique..."
(SOURCE: www.pedagogyoftheoppressed.com/about/
OUR COMMENT: A JB-DIS fail!
Further, we all know that Mr. Rawlings did not engineer or engender
"...an inclusive and participatory democracy...", not for Ghana, not even after "the exit of Chris Atim and Akata-Pore...(because)...They were “book” socialists with dangerously radical views...".
Again, an interesting read, this book report!

You Ghanaian Leftist really make me sick with your infantile lies that seek to belittle the intelligence of Ghanaians. Jerry Rawlings coined “Culture of silence?” In that case why did John Kugblenu and Tommy Thomson die in prison for publishing articles that were deemed critical of the PNDC?
Why did the idiot Kwamena Ahwoi direct the Shit bombing of newspaper offices and later boasted that “that was their answer to newspaper publications against the PNDC? Why were the “Pioneer ” and the “Free Press” banned then?
Who introduced Newspaper Lincensing into Ghana? Why were the Churches directed to register with the state?
Since you were part of it, can you tell us why Captain Kwaffo of the Ghana Air Force died in a“ friendly fire” at East Legon soon after Prof Adu Boahen finished his first lecture on “The Culture of Silence in Ghana?” Why did newspaper editors like Kofi Coomson and others go to prison and become known as “Prison Graduates?”
I guess Obed Asamoah did not write anything about the millions in cedis and foreign currencies that were stolen from under his bed? No, that would be too embarrassing and too close to truth telling for your kind.
I know the Maaofos’ family house at Awisa and their individual houses, as well. Some fibs are better told to the marines!
Valuers the world over usually give the values of buildings and other civil structures in words in addition to the figures. I guess he got the value in words wrong as well?
The so-called consultation you so glibly describe was another one of those dishonest charades carried out by the PDDCs to deceive the people of Ghana.

THIS REVIEW MUST ACCOMPANY EVERY COPY OF THE BOOK. DR ASAMOAH FAILED TO CURB HIS EGO AND FALSE ELITISM BUT THIS REVIEW CORRECTS AND GIVES CONTEXT TO SAFEGUARD THE VALUE OF HIS EFFORT. THANKS BOTH!
I have enjoyed the review by Valerie. It comes from someone who was there in the thick of things. That has nothing to say what Valerie is saying here is the honest above board objective truth. Much of the writeup here is red ...

I suppose this is Mrs Sackey who was married to Lawyer Sackey. She is from the UK and I went to secondary school with two of her sons. I always wonder why she ended up in the Rawlings' murderous regime.
Even Obed Asamoah too has a white wife. I hear she used to teach Psychology at Legon. But that didn't prevent Obed from "despoiling" the young girls in his village area. Well, KKD didn't start that...

I agree with those recommending that Valerie Sackey puts this in a book. Please Valerie do so and tell us more for the sake of tomorrow or better still, why not your own version of the history of Ghana during the period?
