"Defence wins championships!" declared a triumphant Michael Jordan in 1991.......
To win afcon, Ghana must have a team with these qualities
1. Experience coach: the coach's relative experience must be at par or supercede that of his competitors in africa
2. Skillful Players: for when the game make hard like atwomo, tahweee!. U need skillful players, no fear niggas who can get the ball into the 18 with spectacular dribble, freekicks outside 18. U need more players like gyan,.Dede,.assifuah,....abedi (komfo, abodam, skillful players) who are willing to push the the envelope and MAKE THINGS HAPPEN!
3. Experience Players: the more experience players, the better your team will be at making it deep into the tournament with a clear head, composure when the going gets tough.
Folks, these are the 3 ingredients every trophy winning team must have to win a trophy. It's easy to.win afcon becos many African teams lack these 3 qualities. Shehata was able to win over and over becos his team always had these qualities...

GHFUO you are right but it also depends of the team's strengths and weaknesses.
Remember Wayne Gretzky , Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glen Anderson, Jarri Kurri of the Edmonton Oilers Ice Hockey team? They played very little defense but won the 4 Stanley cups with speed and fire-wagon offense and blinding firepower and good goalkeeping from Grant Fuhr. The Maple Leafs under Brophy, won games with offense powered by Wedel Clark, Al Ayafrete, MacDonald and co.
The coach must design the strategy for victory taking into account the ability of the troops.

Say men! The Stallion and Rasheed thats good thinking. Grant must have reliable two stay-at-home defensemen and a superior goal keeper before adopting the whirlwind 3-5-2. These players are professional players and with enough time and training they should be able to play the 3-5-2.In the short term General Grant could use the 3-gear formation in which 4-4-2 is the first gear. Then he could shift to his 3-5-2 then 4-3-3 and back to 4-4-2. The second and third gear should be changed with expert timing or else a defensive void could be created.Practice makes perfect. But from now on, time will fly. After the AFCON, General Grant may pick a younger crop of Black Stars and teach them to perfection.
In the 1960s the fearless and fearsome Black Stars used the 'smoke and fire' 2-3-5 formation against all opponents including Ferenc Puskas and his Real Madrid with Kwame Adarkwa, Baba Yara, Aggrey Fynn, Addo Odamettey, Mohammed Salisu, Wiberforce Mfum, Edward Acquah, Dogo Moro, Dodoo Ankrah all having the brains and the skills for this formation. Thus Grant must select players who will fit perfectly into his 3-5-2 scheme.

Gilbert is absolutely right. I have seen highlights of the game. Cambuur exposed the deficiencies in the system. I suspect their coach must have watched the Stars the previous day. Cambuur launched their attacks down the flanks and our defence particularly the full backs struggled to cope. Gilbert is again right. There was a lack of cohesion particularly between the midfield and defence.

Look what happened to Ghana in Brazil because of him.

Brother Kennosaf, why getting offended about what I wrote. It wasn't meant for you but because of what Vice Chairman of the Black Stars management committee, Kudjoe Fianoo said that he thinks the players of the senior national team were struggling to adjust to the new system introduced by Coach Avram Grant and some people disapprovals of Spain camping episode made me wrote that piece that, we should all keep mute and stop complaining because GFA has got us a fully competent coach to solve our soccer problems for us.

Brother Kojo I am not offended but I was surprised references were made to me with regards to the integrity and approach of the new coach. When the new system became evident, I welcomed it because I believe the Black Stars need to adapt to different formations in order to outwit opponents tactically in the course of matches. In fact I asked Ghanaians through this column not to be hasty in making immediate judgements about the merits or otherwise of the new system following the 1-1 draw in the friendly against Cambuur. So I was very surprised my comments about how the Stars played in that friendly were being interpreted as criticism of the coach. Anyway if you think I was harsh in my response, it was definitely not my intention to do so. There is no harm meant. Neither are there any hard feelings.

The thing though is that as much as I know Avam Grant has the capabilities to take Ghana to the next level, it is quite naive of him to introduce a 3-5-2 system of play so close to the tournament. It has take the almighty Van Gaal and Manchester United 7 months to get any kind of decent grips over this system. How then can Grant expect players most of who are used to the traditional 4-4-2 to suddenly adjust to a new 3-5-2? The main difficulty with this formation is the three at the back instead of the four. Unless we have a very a good ball player in the centre of the back three who can carry the ball from defence into the middle of the park, there will be a problem. In addition, the positioning of the back three is completely different from that of a back four. This takes a lot of getting used to. Two weeks or so is woefully inadequate for any set of players to grasp a 3-5-2 formation. We better prey hard for this one.
