What is even shocking is that there are many MPs who have their own houses within the commuting distance from Accra have given official accommodation. What happened to their homes? They rent them rent them out. And I am pretty sure that the rental income is never declared for taxation.
In the UK an MP is given rent allowance if he or she lives outside London which is about 60 miles radius.
And another thing, Can you imagine an MP in the UK with police or security officer guarding him or her at home. It will never happened.
Recently some of the UK MPs were caught of fiddling their expenses. They were punished and some even went to jail.
The civilised world is not totally free of Corruption and abuse of public funds. But only unlike Ghana and African countries, when you are caught you would be dealt with according to the law.

All politicians - whether NPP or NDC -are in politics not to improve the wellbeing of Kofi and Ama in the villages, towns and cities, but to enrich themselves, their families and cronies. Witness Rawlings using government funds to educate his children abroad;and his wife seizing government industries and properties. Then, despite all the houses Rawlings has acquired in Ghana and abroad, Ghanaian taxpayers had to rebuild his house in Accra - after it was burnt down.
Rawlings'successor,Kufuor - whose brick business failed and was in his late fifties in 2000 - saw an opportunity to enter politics again,to become a multimillionaire. Not only that,he connived with the EO Group to rip-off Ghana to the tune of almost $1billion - from 3.5% share in Ghana's oil proceeds.Kufuor even brought his son (and daughter-in-law),who twice filed for bankruptcy in New Orleans,USA - back to Ghana and gave him $1million meter contract. And don't even talk about his daughter (Accra Mall) and Chief Kufuor's hotel.
After eight years as Defense Minister(2000-2008),the ex-president's junior brother - Dr.Kufuor,is now the richest man in Ghana - worth $1.5billion. And count the ex-gratia Ms.Hesse,Kufuor's friend and head of the committee that awarded him .He was to receive two new houses(to go to his family upon his death),four expensive new cars (to be changed every four years)with chauffeurs, two SUVs,free yearly vacation abroad for two, security personnel, secretary, garden boy and maids, and free utilities.Fit for a Saudi king,eh!
In addition to this blatant stealing from our treasury, the government has to find housing or pay rents for big shots and the dishonorable MPs.Even in the good old US of A(Uncle Sam's country) - the richest in the world - only the president and his vice are housed by the government, though Congressional leaders have security and access to transportation. Condoleeza Rice rented an apartment at the Watergate Building and President Obama,as a Senator from Illinois, rented an efficiency in Washington DC.Both Rice and Obama paid rents out their own pockets. All former U.S presidents live in their own homes.
It's about time we forced these corrupt leeches to jettison the freebies - before another young Rawlings does it for us.

Well said Doc!! I go crazy when these so called public servants are raping the country because of these colonial shit!! I once saw the late NDP LEADER( jack Layton ) coming out of a taxi and running to catch a flight. If it was in Africa , they would delay the flight because a dishonourable is coming and he's late. I asked our current opposition leader to move his car or I'll ticket him and which he did without saying a word . If this was Ghana , he will ask me : do you know who I'm ?? Fools with powers!!
What is even shocking is that there are many MPs who have their own houses within the commuting distance from Accra have given official accommodation. What happened to their homes? They rent them rent them out. And I am pr ...
