Why do we as Ghanaians worship the dead?
We say don't say anything bad of the dead even if we know for a fact that the individual was a monster in real life.
This old culture should be abolished because it doesn't serve as an incentive or deterrent for cruel living people to change their evil ways before they pass away.
If PV was a looter of Ghana's riches and he played a pivotal role under Rawlings' regime which jailed, murdered and tortured hundresd of Ghanaians, why should he be treated as a hero even in death?
Our failure as a nation in calling a spade a spade is part of the reason why we have such insurmoutable problems in Ghana.
Why can't we for once allow someone who has the balls to call out people on their detrimental actions that put Ghana in a big hole we can never get out of??.

You are showing your total lack of understanding in how to cohabit with one another or build a nation together.
Just as you approve of the death of PV, so would someone else approve of the death of your favorite retations, familial or otherwise. Yet, it would not be a decent behavior.
You guys have no sense of discerning the separation of political interactions and decisions from other personal attributes and interactions.
It is not always that people's political actions reflect their personalities. That is why I always admonish all to defer to context in helping us better find where the line falls in making judgments.
On the ultimate judgment of how evil or upright a person was, it is The Lord who would decide. But in the interim, and with our limited scope of assessment, we may not be fair in our judgment of that person. We all tend to be biased, one way or another but a certain set of criteria exist in all Humanity to make reasonable assessment that universally may characterize the assessed. And I think you guys are ignoring most of those criteria.

The two claims he makes are too over-generalized, vague and abstract and do nothing to justify Okoampa's antipathy for the deceased.
All in all therefore, we could conclude that his hateful article is one more product of his drug-infested mind. The man and cocaine are like the dust and the African cripple!

Okoampa didn't say in this piece that he was particularly glad that PV Obeng, rather than someone else, died. He took the trouble to state that there is death for everybody - that we all die, whether we did good or bad and that anybody can be well and healthy today and die tomorrow.
He is saying, more or less, that he couldn't care less for PV's death other than he would to someone else's death since PV was not a particularly great guy - according to him (Okoampa). I don't think we can fault him for having that opinion. After all, we know Okoampa doesn't like anybody who has had anything to do with JJ, PNDC, NDC. So we cannot expect him to be sad at PV's death. We would not expect him to be happy either - and he didn't express any happiness at the death itself. All he is saying is the guy may have died (a sad thing but we all shall die) but he was not a great guy when he lived.
I think he has the right to that opinion which he shouldn't change only because the guy happened to have died.
As for his not knowing PV personally, that is not here or there. He doesn't need to know him personally to dislike his association with Rawlings whom he doesn't equally know. After all, we hate many people in history whom we have not met personally.
Perhaps the best thing Okoampa should have done is not to comment on PV's death at all. But we all know Okoampa that he wants to write an article everyday and to comment on everything that is happening in Ghana even though he left the country some 30 years ago. That is really his fault, not that he is trying to remind readers that PV is a person he didn't like.
And to SAS. You don't like Rawlings. If he dies tomorrow, will you come here and write the nicest things about him only because he happens to be dead? What you may do is not to comment on that death or, if you're forced to, to bemoan the death itself but still maintain that the man was a dictator, killer, blah blah blah...

Kwesi, we understand the facts as Okoampa-Ahoofe expounded on the selective nature of Death. No one knows by what formulae Death decides who it takes and when. We only know that no one lives forever. There are, however, many and various reasons why folks get shocked by the death of others. It is their individual experience to which they have right for, just as you claim, undeniably, that the Professor has the right to voice his opinion.
Nevertheless, firstly, it is not only the facts but also the intent with which one conveys a message that meanings of the message are received. If the Prof had even limited himself to emphasizing why we should not be confounded by death, when it strikes, it would have been different. But he took the occasion to eviscerate any positive humanity out of this guy, and even attacked the former President Kufuor for expressing his shock at the man's passing. Can't Prez. Kufuor also reserve similar individual right to express what he thinks and feels on PV's death or life?
The Prof did not specifically pronounce his elation for the death of PV but it is only those who have reasons to be indifferent that might not care for the wind that carried the sails of his words. Words have meanings in and of themselves, as you know. But it is mostly how they are used that conveys a certain effective meaning.
I have never been partisanly in league with PV or JJ or PNDC, so don't think I am just defending the reputation of the deceased for partisan reasons. But this is not the appropriate forum for partisanship. At least, the common civil expectation, generally, would be to defer any negative excoriation of the dead till after the burial. The Prof may well not share in that culture. But he has no right to offend others with impunity, which is what he did.
Not all Ghanaians liked Drs. Busia, Danquah, Liman, etc. for their political and even personal behaviors. Yet, most Civilized folks regretted their passing. Surely, one does not have to meet others in person to like or dislike them. But I did ask that question of the Prof. rhetorically to suggest unless he knew the deceased in person, the political reasons alone were not sufficient to strip the dead of any affection others had for him. In private, PV might have meant more to Prez Kufuor than the Prof. knows of both in politics.
I know the dear Prof enjoys the crowded audience for his pieces but we sometimes have to alert him on the possible widespread impact of what he and all of us say in Public. I see our current politicking as growing in extremism, leaving less and less room for tolerance. People bear raw hatred for each other and their respective ethnicities just because they disagree on a single issue or belong to an opposing Party. That is not any dispensation of Democracy. That does not help Nation-building.
I hope you see where I am coming from, and what the destination is with my comments.

By our moribund culture that has cripple our march toward self emancipation, which has rewarded mediocrity, and pomposity, and worshiping miscreant, and giving underserving accolades to people whose achievements can hardly be measured, what Okuampah has written seems and sound offensive to some people. Deep down I have a hunch, many people feel the same way as Okoampah. Certainly, we all are going to die one way or the other, someday. No matter how we leave this world/die, we are not going to come back: "all die be die". So in the scheme of things who do we applaud and who do we curse after his/her demise? Where do you place PV? Okuampah has give a bit of background of the political history of PV. Looking about the country's development, And this man was in charge for all hisolitical life, then it leaves much to be desired. As the defacto Prime Minister, as the Chief Political Advisor, as head of NDPC, as head of investment Promotion, where did he take Ghana's development? Pothole ridden streets in Tema, where he lived? Massive joblessness ? Dumsor Dumsor? Water shortages? Very very poor schools and health system that cannot be characterized? What he was able to achieve however, is the massive personal wealth and that of his friends and hanger on's. Let's not crucify Okuampah for his seemingly 'uncouth' remarks, but, if we as a nation wants to move forward, then we must begin to think differently now about how we look at people and their way of life. Is it any surprise, how we heap underserving accolades to the departed? Not long ago a know thief and burglar and armrobber was celebrated in the Volta region! "Damrifa Due, PV.". Ghana shall move on.

Prof, I gather you never had the opportunity to meet the late PV Obeng but those of us who had the chance and the privilege of knowing and working with in the PNDC days, it saddens me to read your article.
Sunday afternoon, I e-mailed two of my former PNDC colleagues after reading the sudden death of PV and the words I used to describe him were the same used by his former colleagues (Mr John Nebugri and Nana Ato Dadzie), Ex-President Kufuor and many others yesterday.
I remember either in our political immaturity or youthful exuberance, it was PV who persuaded us to pause and think over issues before acting. In the midst of confusion, uncertainty and chaos, he was the one who brought people together and gave assurance and where there was disagreements and contentious issues, it was PV who knocked our heads together to arrive a consensus. In short, he was a unifier and a consensus builder, easy to related to.
Of course as human he might have wronged some, which is inevitable because it's those who are inactive and dormant (as he is now) that do not step on toes.
You should be bow your head in shame for this article.
May his soul rest in perfect peace in the bosom of the Lord Almighty.

All of you are being so hypocritical about Okoampa's views on PV's death. You all know who Okoampa is, how he hates Rawlings, P/NDC and everybody who has anything to do with them. Yet you expect Okoampa to come out crying crocodile tears when one of these men dies? At least, Okoampa is consistent in his hatred.
PV can be an angel in disguise, a unifier or whatever, Okoampa hates him and he hates him. He cannot now write nice things about him only because he happens to be dead at age 66-67 - younger than Akufo-Addo.
What I find cheap about Okoampa's present piece is not the expression of his hatred of PV - that is expected. It is that the piece really contains nothing substantive apart from the expression of that hatred. He could just have limited the piece to that. But he went on talking about extraneous things (as he is wont to do) - Shakespeare, Adu-Boahen (whom he claims to be immortalized!), his friend who called him about the death, and, the most irrelevant of all, the 7-footer whom he knew who also died. And so what?
As usual, I don't think Okoampa has enough reasons to write this piece and did so only because of his incurable obsession to write articles on a daily basis.

The fact that someone is dead should not mean the legacy must be assessed with a positive bias. I have my own views about PV Obeng but, for goodness sake, let us be tolerant of dissent in Ghana. The article didn't insult the person of PV Obeng; it just disagreed with the conclusions of certain assessments regarding his legacy. Can the writer not be entitled to that? Most people seem to condemn the late Mr. Obeng to hell! Wow! Are we suggesting that from 1987-2014 that Mr. Obeng served in various capacities, he never did anything good for Ghana? Are we making this this up because we hate him and his party or is it a fact that he was corrupt beyond repairs? I am curious because none of his critics ever pinpoint a single crime that he committed including the author. This seems to be hatred than the reality of the man being corrupt.
Again, if you check his profile, how could a man so corrupt beyond repairs be assigned to very sensitive and high profile positions throughout his public life between 1987-2014? without examples of the wrongs, he has done, these accusations seem to based on jealousy than facts. Are we mere talkatives than critical thinkers? The fact is, Ghana's woes are due to several external and internal factors known to us than a single politician. Obeng may have offended people in both public and private lives and so has he done good in both public and private lives. Our forefathers had a good reasons to instruct us to honor and respect the dead. It's a symbolism that demand us to honor and respect ourselves as people.

Common sense should even guide you in moments like this to refrain from such wanton and shambolic behavior.
It is okay to have beef with people that you think could have done better in positions of trust and privilege, but it is sheer malice and cowardice to attack them when they are no more ! If you felt so strongly about his foibles, why did you not do so when he was alive ? What was stopping you ?

Dear all:
I guess Okoampah-Ahoofe is one person who cannot tolerate divergent opinions and cannot also accept why someone does not belong to his camp. Hence the niche he has carved for himself over the years that he has engaged in write-ups via this forum. Indeed as Africans, the death of even an avowed enemy is a sad moment for all, something Okoampah-Ahoofe gets wrong here. Notwithstanding, he also made some salient points here, such as the lack of well-resourced health facilities such as an ambulance which could have been called instantly to convey the dying man to the nearest hospital. After all for a man of his stature, PV should have had a more dignified exit if the right structures which are more than doable as per our natural resources were in place. How come that it was perhaps a mere rugged taxi that rushed him to hospital with no health expert by his side on the way to the hospital? That is as a result of the apology of a nation that we have become since independence owing to chronic corruption. Quo Vadis Ghana?

Surely, better Health systems increase our chances of survival. But they do not guarantee our total evasion from the strike of the 'Eliminator'--Death. Professor, you admitted that in this piece. So, why draw any political punches out of this death this early? We have lived through various wasteful political periods to date. There is no doubt about that. But why choose PV to bear the brunt of that lack of decent Health System? The guy was only a cog in a machinery and was never the final decision-maker. Did you ever catalogue everything PV wished done for the Nation and advised his superiors on?
Additionally, what if others claimed that had Nkrumah not been overthrown we might be enjoying that decent Health system you are referring to, and tend to blame all untimely preventable deaths since his overthrow on your favorite coup-makers of 1966? You would come out blazing with verbal torpedoes to cut those suggesting that to shreds.
In the same train of thought, would you accept that had Akufo-Addo managed his tenure as the Attorney-General any better we could have had a better Supreme Court that might have given the judgment you and he preferred in the landmark Election Petition case that you so vehemently rejected? At least, a precedence of unquestionable fair judgment could have been set by your most adored former Attorney-General and relentless lifelong seeker of th e Presidency. The record shows us differently.
Is that a too remote analogy for you? Even if your hatred for the late PV could be justified, say, on very personal level, which you are entitled to, your attack on his character is ill-timed. The man has not even yet been buried, for Christ's sake! If you think it is all politics at your expert best to be this insensate, you have betrayed the refinement in our Politics that the democracy your much-touted model politicians hoped for the Nation.
As a Professor, ostensibly enlightened in why humanity should pursue congeniality, you ought to set example for our young to emulate and not mislead them into the dark World of savage dehumanization of others.
What if PV had only acquiesced to helping Rawlings as a way to minimize whatever evil you could impute to the former Military leader? I guess you would similarly smear Kufuor, too, with that evil you see in Rawlings, since the former was also once on the Junta leader's Staff.
You have by this piece established that you are an incorrigible polarizing figure who would'nt hesitate to unleash raw truculence on those you politically disagree with. To you, folks must detest to the bone and wish for death all they oppose politically. That is crude, Sir! That is most shamefully abhorrent and a despicably inordinate loathing in modern Politics.
Long Live Ghana!!!

Where are the ones Akuffo Addo and Kuffour built during their reign in the global surplus economy era? In 2000, when the world was enjoying surplus economy, even countries like India and Greece were given aid to Ghana. Talk is cheap?

P.V. Obeng is an Ewe albeit born in Akorokre.
His parents were ewes domiciled in Akorokere. He attended Opoku Ware Secondary School in Kumasi. That was as far as he could get as an Asante. Go and research if you doubt it.

You are a damn liar. PV obtained his doctorate in Engineering. He was a lecturer at UST and Chief Engineer for Mankoadze Fisheries. Useless man, PV is is not an Ewe living in Akrokyere but a native of Akrokyere. Why make politics ruin your godly nature to become a fool still in your vomit as king Solomon said. Your lies has made you the most foolish person second to Okoampah Ahoofe on this forum. Jealousy will kill you and all the idiots who think like you. You will all die one day because death is inevitable but if you will be remembered is the issue. Some of you cannot even get a befitting burial yet, you come here to spew nonsense.
I have all along suspected this Okoampah of being the most callous, heartless, and hate-filled vermin on earth. He has by this opinion piece and many others, confirmed my worst fears of him. Such a character doesn't deserve p ...
