Mugabe started well, but has become one of the worst leaders in Africa. Nkrumah was heading that direction. Forgotten the hot water bottle bombs, the DC's including those who harassed my father and closed his shop, remember the detentions without trial and the many atrocities. Yes he started well, my father was with the CPP, I have read Nkrumah's book. But there is something wrong with black African's. They get power drunk, intimidate their opponents. give themselves titles and become Heads of States for life. That is why I love Madiba who saw that he did not need to Head of State for life. But Mugabe, Idi Amin and some others displayed what was glaring power drunkenness. Nkrumah never got there but could have gone there and the jury is out. As to what he would have been like the jury is out. Let him die and let us pursue excellence. We can forever blame the CIA, Neocolonialism, imperialism, only God knows. If Rawling had been killed after his revolution, many would have hailed him, but honestly after all the bloodshed here we are with Nincompoops in charge, the cedi in free fall and nobody know what to do.

I have addressed the issue of Nkrumah's despotic rule on this forum before. I have thoroughly argued both sides of the coin. The progress he brought in terms of infrastructure and the arbitrary rule by a personality cult, much as Rawlings did, as well as his not benign mass jailing of the opposition.
Here are excerpts. Read the summary at the end to reflect on the fact that Nkrumah had died shortly after he: was deposed. Had he been left alone to die in office it can be argued that Ghana would be a far better place. Why can't we just leave the sordid history behind and move forward with lessons learned? Let it go:
"As fanatical Nkrumaists begin to feel the righteous heat of historical truth and accuracy, it is only natural that they would become agitated and desperate."
IT SEEMS THAT YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS FANATICAL. EVERYTIME YOU FEEL THE HEAT OF THE FALLACIES OF THE NLM CLIQUE EXPOSED, YOU COUNTER BY ATTACKING NKRUMAH. SO YOUR REACTION TO YESTERDAY'S ARTICLE ABOUT THE NLM IS FOR YOU TO "ATTACK" TODAY?
IF YOU CAN DEFEND THOSE NATION WRECKERS, THEN DO SO AND LEAVE NKRUMAH ALONE.
"Having enjoyed the undeserved honeymoon of tepid and outright diffident Ghanaian scholarship ? actually, pseudo-scholarship ? for some sixty years, these Nkrumacrats were beginning to feel self-confident and assured in the canonicity of their historiographical mendacity, their veritable stock in trade."
YOUR MANGLED PHRASEOLOGY DOES NOT GIVE ANY CREDENCE THAT YOU ARE A PROFESSOR. YOUR PREMISE IS ALSO FLAWED. WOULD YOU COUNT YOURSELF AS A PSUEDO-INTELLECTUAL? WHAT ACADEMICIAN DO YOU KNOW WHO HAS BEEN RETICENT FOR 60 YEARS, A PERIOD WHICH WOULD PREDATE THE EXPLOITS OF NKRUMAH?
"Unfortunately for these ?Internal/Domestic Black Imperialists? (I/D BI), a new day has dawned with the turn of the twenty-first century."
IT IS OBVIOUS THAT YOUR CONSTANT REVERSION TO THE COLONIAL AND IMMEDIATE POST COLONIAL ERA, IN YOUR ARTICLES HERE; SHOWS THAT YOU ARE BACKWARD IN YOUR THINKING. COME OF AGE NOW SO YOU DO NOT GROW OLDER BUT STUNTED IN YOUR MENTAL PROGRESSION.
"The preceding simply means that no longer would Ghanaians and, by logical extension, continental Africans sit duck ? or idly by ? while these primitive Nkrumaist ideologues indoctrinated our sons and daughters with the jaundiced anti-intellectualism that is the hallmark of vintage Nkrumaism."
WHAT IS PRIMITIVE IS YOU LIVING IN THE PAST AND YOUR DISDAIN FOR ACADEMIC DISCOURE. YOUR USE OF INSULTS IS THE HALLMARK OF THOSE WHO CANNOT DISPASSIONATELY RELAY A COHERENT AND COHESIVE THOUGHT. YOU ARE INTOLERANT OF DIVERGENT PERSPECTIVES, AND YOU EGOTISTICALLY LABEL OTHERS IN A DISMISSIVE WAY. STOP THE NAME CALLING, BECAUSE IT REFLECTS ON YOUR FLAWED PSYCHE AND DIMINUTIVE ABILITY TO DEBATE ISSUES IN A COUTH MANNER.
"Consequently, it hardly comes as any surprise that Professor Francis Nkrumah, the otherwise reticent dauphin of the late Tyrant and Dictator of Ghana would cynically rail against what the former pediatrician of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital terms as ?the elitist mold? of Ghanaian tertiary institutions that routinely produce ?neo-liberal capitalist? graduates who, supposedly, are to be squarely held responsible for much of Ghana?s massive and grinding poverty (Ghanaweb.com 5/2/07)."
A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHAT DR. FRANCIS NKRUMAH POINTED OUT IS WHAT YOU ARE. YOU ARE IN THE U.S EARNING DOLLARS BECAUSE YOU HAVE MANAGED TO PULL THE WOOL OVER THE EYES OF A THIRD RATE SCHOOL TO HIRE YOU. ALL YOU CAN DO IS SPEW UNSUITABLE NONSENSE THAT WILL NOT ADVANCE GHANA IN ANY WAY. YOU FIT THE MOLD OF SOME OTHER NATION WRECKERS AND I FERVENTLY PRAY THAT YOUR DEMISE WILL BE SOON.
YOU WILL NOT HAVE A LEGACY OR EVEN INFAMY, BUT YOU WILL BE CONFINED TO IGNOMINY AND THE TRASH HEAP OF SCHOLARLY OBSCURITY.
"Perhaps somebody ought to point out to Professor Francis Nkrumah the fact that as an Arch-Socialist, his father, deposed President Kwame Nkrumah, maintained no fixed salary or income. In other words, what his followers cavalierly presume to represent the purported ideals of the proverbial ?African Show Boy? is dramatically contradicted by the practical existence and (mis-)deeds of the man."
YOUR ESPECIALLY DOUBTFUL GRASP OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS REVEALED IN THE MUDDLED THOUGHTS YOU TRY TO EXPRESS HERE. WHAT FIXED SALARY ARE YOU WRITING OF? A SALARY TO NKRUMAH HIMSELF? HOW DOES THAT TIE-IN TO ANY PURPORTED MIS-DEEDS? YOU MUST LEARN THE BASICS OF COMPOSTION TO ELUCIDATE YOUR POLEMICS WITH COHERENT THOUGHTS.
"Unfortunately for the vested, or interested, likes of Professor Francis Nkrumah Ghana has politically long since transcended the sheepish and stolid era of empty rhetoric and theatrical pontification."
IN THIS INSTANCE THE ADAGE THAT WHEN YOU POINT A FINGER, THREE POINT BACK AT YOU , IS VERY APT IN DESRIBING YOUR EMBARRASING BEHAVIOR. WHAT IS BANAL OR STOLID IS YOUR DEMURE WRITING ( I AM BEING GENEROUS HERE). YOU CAN ONLY STIMULATE INSULTS AGAINST YOUR PERSON WHEN YOU WRITE THESE ARTICLES, RATHER THAN A COMPREHENSIVE EXPANSION, BY OTHERS, ON ANY PROFOUND IDEA YOU PROPOUND.
YOU ARE A FAILED SCHOLAR WHO MUST NOW INDULGE HIMSELF IN GENERATING SCHISM BY QUERULOUS CARPING TO BOOST HIS DIMINISHED STATURE IN THIS CLASSROOM.
"In sum, we intend to ensure that none of our children and young relatives, including President Nkrumah?s own grandchildren, would be blindly and morbidly corralled into a pathological and neo-Nazi Young Pioneer Movement (YPM)"
YOUR ATTEMPTS TO FORCE AN INDOCTRINATION OF OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN IS WHAT WE WILL ACTIVELY RESIST. YOU AND WHO ARE THE PEOPLE YOU REFER TO AS "WE"? LET US KNOW WHO THEY ARE AND WE WILL SCOURGE THEM WITH THE SAME PASSION THAT YOU WILL BE SUBJECTED TO, WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT. YOUR METHODS ARE VERY MUCH LIKE THE NAZIS, BUT YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED NOW, OR EVER!
"in order to not only unconscionably forge a morally and spiritually regressive Personality-Cult around the late Dictator, but also determinedly bastardize an otherwise creative and ebullient Ghanaian national ethos, or moral sensibility."
YOU DO NOT HAVE HAVE THAT GHANAIAN ETHOS OR A PATRIOTIC SENTIMENT IN YOU AND THAT IS WHY YOU PROMOTE DIVISIONS. WHAT YOU ATTRIBUTE TO OTHERS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOUR ILK IN THE NPP IS TRYING TO DO IN GHANA. WRITE ABOUT THAT, IF YOU HAVE THE METTLE TO CHALLENGE YOUR OWN KIND IN THEIR MIS-DIRECTED EFFORTS TO SHIFT THE ATTENTION FROM THEIR CURRENT FAILING, TO "DEAD" HISTORY.
"But that an organization going by the imperious name of the Socialist Forum of Ghana (SFG) actually exists, and also could freely host ideological fanatics like Professor Francis Nkrumah (and who can really blame him?) and Mr. Kwesi Pratt, Jr., only goes to show just how far Ghanaians have come by way of political and ideological maturity since 1964,"
SO WHILE YOU APPLAUD THE FACT THAT EVERYONE HAS A PLACE AT THE ROUNDTABLE OF DIALOGUE, YOU MUST BE THE MEANEST AND BADDEST DOG, AND BARK THE LOUDEST, OTHERWISE ALL THE OTHERS ARE YOUR NO GOOD?
YOUR SUPER-INFLATED EGO AND DELIRIOUS FEELING OF IMPORTANCE IS A FARCICAL COMEDY. SO GIVE UP THE CRITIQUE AND COME UP WITH YOUR OWN THINK-TANK THAT PROMOTES ANY IDEA AT ALL. YOU ARE BEREFT OF ANY INTELLECTUAL THOUGHT OR IF YOU HAVE THEM, THEN YOU ARE QUITE ADEPT AT KEEPING IT SECRET!
"when Kwame Nkrumah declared himself Ghana?s Life-President and his so-called Convention People?s Party (CPP) the only legitimate political institution or assembly in the former Gold Coast, with our woefully betrayed and newly-independent nation shamefully flying the ?cock-and-bull? flag of the CPP, rather than the black star-studded horizontal bars of Red, Gold and Green."
HOW LONG DID NKRUMAH LIVE AFTER HE WAS OVERTHROWN? YOU NOW HAVE THE ANSWER TO THE GERMANE ISSUE, WHICH IS THAT, HAD NKRUMAH BEEN LEFT TO IMPLEMENT HIS PUSH TO GET GHANA INTO AN INDUSTRIAL AGE, HE WOULD HAVE DIED IN A FEW YEARS, BUT GHANA WOULD HAVE LIVED ON IN WITH A MEASURE OF PROSPERITY.
WHAT WE HAVE INSTEAD IS THE TRUNCATION OF WELL FUNDED INITIATIVES BECAUSE PERSONS OF MINDSETS SUCH AS YOURS, HATED HIM SO MUCH THEY BROUGHT A COUNTRY TO IT'S KNEES; WITH TREACHEROUS ACTIONS. YOU STILL WILL NOT LEAVE HIM ALONE EVEN IN DEATH, AND NOW YOU ATTACK HIS OFFSPRING! YOU ARE BUT A MANGY CUR, BUT TODAY YOU WIL TURN TAIL AND SCURRY OFF IN MISERY.
IT IS OBVIOUS THAT FOR GHANA TO HAVE PEACE, HATEFUL PEOPLE LIKE YOU MUST EXPIRE FIRST, OR BE REFORMED IN YOUR MINDS AND ACTIONS. PICK YOUR CHOICE, BECAUSE THE DAY WILL COME SOON WHEN GHANA WILL BE RID OF YOU AND YOUR KIND. YOU WILL REAP THE HATRED YOU HAVE SOWN OVER SO MUCH TIME!!!
"Indeed, it is rather oxymoronic for Professor Francis Nkrumah to bitterly complain about the purported ?re-writing? of Ghana?s history. For, really, if anybody at all could ever be accused of RE-WRITING the history of Ghana, it is the elder Mr. Kwame Nkrumah, who impudently and mendaciously claimed to have been the inventor ? or primal proponent ? of the Blydian ideology of the ?African Personality? as well as the singular spearhead of Ghana?s anti-colonial movement (Ghana News Agency 5/2/07)."
HOW COULD NKRUMAH HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF "RE-WRITING" THE HISTORY OF GHANA, WHEN GHANA WAS CREATED UNDER HIS WATCH? HE DID WRITE THE FIRST CHAPTER IN A COUNTRY WE NOW CALL GHANA, AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE "AFRICAN PERSONALITY" IS UNSURPASSED BY ANY OTHER IN OUR CONTINENTS HISTORY. NONE OF YOUR HEROES CAN MEASURE UP OR BE A COUNTER WEIGHT, AND THE SOONER YOU ACCEPT THAT WE CAN MOVE FORWARD TO DOING MEANINGFUL THINGS FOR GHANA!
"Needless to say, if ever the righteous, or incontrovertibly corrective, ?re-visioning? of Ghana?s postcolonial history occurs, it would not be effected via ?local and international media?articles,? but in the form of books and comprehensive, scholastic essays published in reputable journals, the very sort of ?elitist? media that Professor Francis Nkrumah may not be likely to patronize."
YOUR SMUG CONTENTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF WHAT "FRANCIS NKRUMAH MAY NOT BE LIKELY TO READ", SHOULD HAVE ENDED AT "NEEDLESS TO SAY". ALL THAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN SO FAR HAS BEEN A NEEDLESS AND REPUGNANT ATTEMPT TO SULLY OTHERS, BUT YOU HAVE ONLY MANAGED TO FURTHER TARNISH YOUR BATTERED IMAGE.
I WILL CAMPAIGN TO HAVE YOU DISMISSED FROM YOUR FACULTY, BECAUSE YOU HAVE DEMONSTRATED IN THIS FUROM THAT YOU CANNOT ADEQUATELY GRASP THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE WELL ENOUGH TO TEACH IT, OR ANY OTHER SUBJECT THAT REQUIRES WRITING YOUR THOUGHTS.
"It is, to be certain, rather pathetic that Nkrumaist lackeys like Mr. Pratt would set up a so-called Freedom Center to ?infiltrate? the minds of Ghanaian youth. Needless to say, had President Nkrumah ruled Ghana in the Internet Age, this most democratic of global information systems would almost definitely have been banned in Ghana."
ONCE AGAIN, IT WAS "NEEDLESS TO SAY", ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU ARE RIDICULOUSLY CONJECTURING AS TO WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN IF NKRUMAH HAD RULED GHANA INTO THE INTERNET AGE. LOOK AT THE IVORY COAST FOR YOUR ANSWERS TO WHAT GHANA COULD HAVE ACHEIVED AS A ONE-PARTY STATE WITH A PRESIDENT-FOR-LIFE.
LOOK AT THE SAME COUNTRY, COTE D'IVORE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE OF TRIBAL INSTINCTS ARE ALLOWED TO CONTROL THE HELM OF A PROSPEROUS COUNTRY.
WE WILL NEVER LET THAT HAPPEN TO GHANA, AS LONG AS WE CAN RESIST PEOPLE LIKE YOU. IT IS YOU WHO IS THE CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER TO GHANA. YOUR DEMISE IS IMMINENT. MARK MY WORD! THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL.

It appears certain Citizens have vowed to fight relentlessly to keep the old perceptions and perpetuate the pains of our Political past. They seem to feed off it.

Yaw Sebe, I will answer your questions and I hope you will answer mine too.
"Sarpong; Can you please tell us whether we had a constitution in 1966?"
YES we had the first Republican constitution that specified how a President should come to an office through citizens voting. The moment Nkrumah made himself President for life without going through the formalities of constitutional amendments, in any democracy, that would have called for impeachment and therefore Nkrumah's Presidency the moment he made himself President for life became nullified and the constitution he was voted into office ceased to exist.
2. Could we change the constitution?
YES we can change constitution, we can amend constitution too and Ghana has changed constitution four times and have amended the constitutions many times but not as Nkrumah did by changing it himself by declaring himself President for life. Ghanaians should have been asked to vote on it and two third of Parliamentarians have to ratify it to become law. Did Nkrumah do that?
3. Did we have parliament?
YES We did have Parliament but it was not Parliament that made him President for life. He did not follow the laid down rules to amend the constitution.
Now tell me who is the illiterate now.
I have answered your questions, now tell me if Kuffour could have done the scenerio I have analysed below without being impeached.
Let's assume President Kuffour thought he was a good President and his economic model was working good for the country in 2008 and therefore any leadership change will wreck the economy then and declare himself President for life and ban NDC and all other political parties and started arresting the leaders of NDC and other political parties, would those Nkrumah pompom wavers who have found a home in NDC Party agree to that?

Re: RE: Nkrumah's Legacy Is Not Sacrosanct
Dear Sarpong,
In order for you to objectively criticize and debate you must be well informed on the facts. There is no accuracy in the numbers you quote.
Please go to the links below and read the Gold Coast Economic Report from 1953 and 1957. I will provide you some highlights from those documents to show where you have erred:
1953
1. The Gold Coast is a British dependency on the Guinea coast of West Africa it ha an area of 90,0O0 square miles and a population of about 4.4 million almost all of whom are African. Though a comparatively small country by African standards it has assumed an importance out of proportion to its size.
The Gold Coast is, after Malaya, the largest contributor to the dollar pool of the sterling area. The principal source of dollars is cocoa, a crop in which the Gold Coast leads the world by a long way and which has commanded high prices since the war. To this are added gold, manganese and hardwood exports in important quantities. Though cocoa still dominates the economy, it is menaced by a disease known as swollen-shoot.
The Gold Coast contains the site of a proposed project, which, if it is undertaken, will be one of the most important single enterprises in the economic development of the Commonwealth.
The Volta River aluminum Scheme
is designed to mine bauxite in the Gold Coast, to dam the Volta river for electric power, and to use the power to produce 210,000 tons of aluminum a year.
The whole project with the railways and port facilities it requires would cost at present estimates l44 million pounds. It would be a joint enterprise of the Gold Coast Government, the British Government, a Canadian company and, possibly, a British company.
At present the Gold Coast is very prosperous. But there is a general realization of the need to reduce its dependence on cocoa, which, apart from the ravages of disease, is subject to highly volatile shifts in price.
It is doubtful whether this can be done either simply or quickly. The Volta River project offers both long and short term benefits to the economy, and the present government is strongly in favor of it.
It is probably too early to say how stable the government is or how firm it will be in pursuing a
sound economic policy in developing the country.
SARPONG NOTE THAT THERE IS A DEFICIT IN REVENUES IN RELATIONS TO DEVELOPMENT NEEDS, EVEN IN 1953:
Under the terms of the ordinances authorizing the increases in cocoa
export duties large sums have been earmarked for development.
Development expenditure over the five years 1951/52 to 1955/56 is planned at about 75 million, of which 51 million is for the "Development Plan" and the rest for the railways and harbors, including the new harbor at Tema.
Approximately 64.5 million of the 75 million required should be in sight by the end of the current financial year (1952/53) from contributions to develonmernt funds, loans from the Cocoa Marketing Board, Colonial development and welfare funds
(for the whole period) and miscellaneous sources.
20 million more is expected from revenue over the following three years, part of it as a voluntary contribution and part as a mandatory one. THIS LEAVES A GAP OF 10 MILLION.
Nothing definite can be said about this gap. There are several reasons why it may, in fact, not occur at all. The rate of expenditure on development is much below that planned and the opinion of officials most closely concerned is that it will remain so.
There are also plans to raise more local loans either from the Marketing Board or from the public by issuing premium bonds. Finally, some further assistance from 143A may be forthcoming.
Ordinary expenditure is sill rising as a result of salary increases and the recurrent expenses due to the development
plan.
The most one can say is that the Gold Coast is unlikely to need external financial assistance for another two years and, quite possibly, not even then.
Unit: West African £
1 West African £ = 1 Sterling = U.S. $2.80
Central Government Finance (million pound sterling):
1956/57(Estimates)
Total Revenue 47 mil
(of which cocoa duties) (14 mil)
Total Expenditure 70 mil
(current account) (42 mil)
(capital account) (28 mil)
Surplus (+) or Deficit(-) -26 MIL
SARPONG PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PROJECTED 1957 DEFICIT IS 26 MILLION POUNDS!!!!
Sterling Assets (million pounds): 1955(Dec. 31)
Government 84 mil
Cocoa Marketing Board 63 mil
Other Official Institutions 12 mil
Banks (net) 14 mil
Currency Reserves 42 mil
Total is 215 million pounds!!! of which the government had only 84 million pounds. Multiply that by 2.8 to get $235.2 million dollars in 1952. That will not be 20 billion in today's money!!!
PLEASE NOTE THE PUBLIC DEBT IN 1956 TOO:
Public Debt, Less Sinking Funds: (£ million) - June 1956
Internal 19 million
Of which, debt to Cocoa
Marketing Board (13 million)
External Debt 1 million
Total Debts in 1956 is 20 million pounds or 56 million dollars!
PLEASE STOP BEING RECKLESS WITH THE FACTS AND EDUCATE YOURSELF FIRST BEFORE YOU ARE ACCUSED OF FABRICATIONS, BECAUSE OF YOUR INSISTENCE ON WRITING FIRST AND WAITING FOR ME TO CORRECT YOU!
WHAT HURT US IN TERMS OF REVENUES FOR ECONOMIC PLANNING IN 1954 ONWARD, WERE THE DROPS IN COCOA PRICES:
In the case of cocoa, production has slipped back from its prewar peak. In general, the rate of increase in production, insofar as this can be measured, has become slower and slower.
Because of price changes, however, the real value of exports has moved in just the opposite direction. The accompanying table shows that between 1936/40 and 1951/55 the money value of exports has increased over seven times, the real value about 2 times and the
volume only about 15%.
The change in the terms of trade has been spectacular, being now at least double the prewar level.
The main cause for improvement in
the terms of trade has been the dramatic rise in the price of cocoa after World War II from 18 pounds a ton in 1938 to 200 pounds in 1948 and 4O0 pounds in 1954.
IT IS NOW BELOW £200 A TON

Here is a comment I made ..way back in 2007, or earlier..I hope you reflect on it and don' get people further steeped in ignorance. It is imperative that the good, bad and ugly are all balanced in reporting facts:
Education was probably the most valuable investment made in Ghana in period after our independence. The current semi-literacy and mis-education of our populace is the most profound effect of the truncation of well funded initiatives; by our first coup.
We now have become a nation that borrows not to educate people to use their brain and brawn in our own technologies, but a class that slaves to attain individual symbols of ostentatious wealth in imported “used”; clothes, cars, cell phones, and the things we show off; while barely able to relay a coherent thought.
The adage that small minds gossip, average minds discuss past events, and strong minds discuss ideas, is very true and evident in Ghana. Here small minds spread rumors of impending coups, we are still talking of our disgraceful past, and no one has any new ideas.
Like a dog that returns to it's vomit we have forgotten the ideal of "Sankofa" and think only of plundering the country and others for individual gain, that of one clique, or more perniciously one tribe.
The ideal of "Sankofa" is to guide our future with the memory of the mistakes in our past. Those rusty and weedy factories that were sold off en-masse after our first coup held great promises for our country. We continue to sell-off vital infrastructure and mineral resources for a pittance; because of debts, and hope that we would still have jobs for those we mis-educate with outdated books. God Bless Our Homeland Ghana.

Education was probably the most valuable investment made in Ghana in that period......
The intelligentsia we export is a result of investments in free and compulsory education afforded Ghanaians.
Capital investment is the only common dependency shared by all developing nations and that is pragmatically financed, often, by going into debt. There are many Ghanaians who have 30 year mortgages in countries other than Ghana and must live in those countries in virtual poverty till their cars, homes, and children's education is paid for.
Those countries, we live in, also have massive debts in the trillions of dollars. We cannot fund deficit sending in Ghana by printing more money since we purchase all imports in foreign currency. Yet, we could not heed our government urging us to forgo our taste for some imported goods so be can have a surplus in our import to export ratio.
We could have used those surplus monies to fund our development. We also would rather put ourselves in debt in other countries and fund their coffers than to collectively endure a national debt in Ghana that allows us collectively, in a relatively shorter expanse of time, to have more material and intangible wealth for the next generation and in our own country.....
That was the "Socialistic" ideal that Nkrumah was derided for.

We are all blaming Dr Nkrumah for been a dictator and all of those negative descriptions often assigned to him yet when we take a critical look today all over Africa including Ghana and observe is happening to our countries for the last 20 years of experimenting with Western style democracy can we sincerely say we are happy with this thing called democracy?
Yes Nkrumah's dictatorship wasn't the best yet during his time things were done when needed. Corruption and mismanagement was minimal compared to today, even if some state money was misused there is still plenty evidence of all that he did.
I do believe that the black man is simply not a natural law abiding human being like the white man, he needs whips behind his butt to do the basic things right. Democracy works best in well educated, self disciplined, and advanced societies with the necessary resources to run an efficient system. No nation in Africa currently qualifies for the above descriptions.
Even at this stage of information technology and education that we had attained in Ghana over the years foolishness and stupidity still abounds every where how then do we believe we were ready for Western style democracy at that time? We weren't ready then neither are we ready now!
I would be ready to welcome a dictatorship anytime that can get things done in a timely manner with minimal corruption and little abuse than this madness that we are currently stucked in called democracy.
We are simply not ready for Western Styled Democracy now, may be later in the future.
If China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan developed the quickest under dictatorships we can also do it. Thats my take.

How many homes KN ever owned and compare that to Mobutu whom Ragan called "our friend"? If Mobutu could be a friend to the CIA,then he's friend to the forces who toppled KN, 'cos a friend of my friend is also my friend.
If you like the mind set that hated KN, then you couldn't have hated Mobutu. You must like him as well.

Your essential commodities anecdote which depicts the fake events of time reminds me of shackles of slave mentality. The worse form of slavery is mental slavery.
How can you exchange our whole grain and organic food like Koko, Agadii, Abolo, Komi, Kontomerie, yam, plaintain, red Palm oil, beans, sea food etc for conserved tin food? Do I have to pity such negro whose diet have been chnaged so that he neglects his own food whilst we waste billions to Import junk food? Why are we poor? If we neglect our own foodstuffs and use the hard earned foreign Exchange meant for development to Import unhealthy fat Food we get poorer and poorer and the Europeans, Americans get richer and richer. We are victims of our own folly.
It is not as if these so called "essential commodities" were not available but Mate Mehu traders created a situation of artificial shortage to destroy the country just as they are doing today. Ghanaians at that time as of today had a preference for foreign goods. We will join the line in the scorching sun for Peak milk whislt Swiss firm Nestle was producing Ideal milk locally. Ghanaians would go for Portugese tin sardine instead of the one produced at Tema Food complex. We prefered Ovaltine to Milo. We will rather join queues to buy Tate and Lyle cube sugar when Komenda granulated sugar was available. I can go endlessly. Ain't we being stupid?
Sarpong, those who never saw it and heard it through the grapvine should at best shut it.

I continue to writ the same thing because you Nkrumah factotums always dance around the issue without telling us the right answer.
I will say it again. The only legitimate coup in Ghana was the 1966 coup because Nkrumah has made himself President for life and taken the decision from the voters to change the President if they wish to do so and unless you come up with what we could have done to change Nkrumah without a coup, then brace yourself to hear more of the same.
The reason all the other coups were illegitimate is that, the military rather usurped the freedom of the electorates to change the government, our constitutional rights. Come again, Nana.

Sarpong the above is a flawed premise. Was the government under Kwame Nkrumah not constitutionally elected? So why has the Military leverage to force a coup down the throat of the electorate and sell Ghana down the river for a bowl of wheat?
If Ghana was taken over by the Mate Mehu in 1957, it would have been in miserable state than it is today. That much is true.

Just1ce, are you aware that Nkrumah and the CPP accumulated that reserve at great cost upon assuming office from 1953 onwards, thanks to the boom in commodity prices due to the Korean War and his acceptance of the infamous "anchor of safety" advice given to him by the West Indian Nobel Laureate Arthur Lewis?
And that policy led to the revolt of the cocoa farmers who voted overwhelmingly for the CPP, and this discontent was exploited was exploited the defeated opposition politicians who took charge of the NLM, and we are still paying for the cost of that policy and the reserves gained therein? Yes, without that policy and the reserves, there would have been no NLM, no UP, no PDA and detentions and no need for a de jure one party state. Ghana would have remained a de facto one party just as in Singapore and many other Third World countries during the 1960s. After all, many of the NLM leaders were former leaders in the CPP.
Now, it is jejune nonsense and completely unacademic to claim that a one party state undemocratic. Yes, it may not be the Western style plural or liberal democracy but it is closer to the original concept of Athenian democracy and African consensual and consociational democracy than plural democracy based on adversarial, party system.
For your education - you need that seriously - look for Prof. Macpherson's broadcast on Radio Canada, Some Aspects of Democracy or something like that. It is just a slim publication which formed part og what we used as "pensum", aka, reading list, in the Dept. of Pol. ANDY K, sometimes you let your mouth precede your brains, or in this instance, you allowed your hands to type faster before you engaged your brains. Where did I say one party state is undemocratic?
One Party state is democratic as long as the people choose to be under such a system. Our first Republic constitution did not call for a one party state, Nkrumah used his overwhelming majority in Parliament to change the constitution in the midstream.
If we agreed to what Nkrumah did without going through the proper formalities in amending the constitution, it sets a precedence for future administrations to do the same.
Now I don't want to hear your mumbo-jumbo blabbering but tell me if you would have agreed to Kuffour using his Parliamentary majority during his administration to ban NDC and making Ghana a one party state as Nkrumah did. ANSWER THAT.
Yes, we blokes are just too uneducated because we don't follow blindly like you retarded sheeps who don't use your brains but rely on somebody's stupid theories, moron.

You Mate Mehu act as if you never did anything wrong and Nkrumah used arbitrary justice on you. There is always a reaction to an Action. The NLM is a terrorist group.
Had they done what they did to Ghana in America or Britain they would not have lived to see the sun another day. In America they will face the death penalty.
Is it democratic to ban communist party in America in the 1950's until today?
So this begs the question why did NLC advisor Busia ban the CPP or anything Nkrumah when he was complaining to the world of UP ban? Hypocrites in flesh and blood.
In fact the display of intellectual and academic poverty are on the rise in Ghana but most of all on Ghanaweb resident writers.

As for the NLM and UP Terrorist and criminals sending them to a Nsawam five star prison yard was too goood. SARP in your Yesi Yesi write up you asked if Kufuor could have done the same? I put across a rhetoric which you found hard to uptake.
Again, 20th and 21st century, these are two different time lines and circumstances. Hindsight is always 20/20. It was eleventh hour when Kufuor handed over power to Mills. Kufuor nearly did the same but he couldn't swallow the pill. That is why the Akyem Mafia NPP have not forgiven him.

In 1964, he proposed a constitutional amendment which would make the CPP the only legal party and himself president for life of both nation and party. The amendment passed with 99.91 percent of the vote, an implausibly high total that led observers to condemn the vote as "obviously rigged." In any event, Ghana had effectively been a one-party state since independence. The amendment transformed Nkrumah's presidency into a de facto legal dictatorship.

Justice, you low grade sonofabitch! Do you think throwing uncouth insults at pple much superior to you in anything you can dream of makes your day?
Btw, let me tell you that I wrote my piece in between pressure of work and didn't bother to read through. Rejoinders are written off the cuff unlike articles. Some errors of omission and commission are exempted in the former by the rules of netiquette.
Now, Nkrumah went through the appropriate constitutional processes by holding a referendum to make Ghana a one party state. So his action was fully democratic, even though with hindsight, as that was not necessary at all. Ghana was virtually a de facto one party state by 1964. It could have stayed like that. But given the challenges of building a new nation - the issues of integration and cohesion - it was the norm and belief in the 1960s that a one party state best serve that purpose. Both leaders on the right and left share the same belief. The same situation does not prevail in the 2000s, the era of Kufuor, so the porous justification, based on a false premise, for Kufuor declaring a one party state doesn't exist. For leading a regime of "thieves and thiefettes"?
Talk of not following "somebody's stupid theories"! Why are you then spewing ideas under liberal democracy? As I wrote, you're too uneducated to be taught things like what I was writing about. e.g., African consensual democratic ideals which do not recognise entrenched oppositions.

Tweah! What comes out of your mouth clearly shows that you are just a dirty scum, a dzimakplavi perhaps born to a prostitute.
You jaded Akan ingrates belonging to the NPP in particular have been saying some of us have inferiority complex while proclaiming how superior you are at every opportunity. So I have been asking for decades now what makes you superior? B'cos you are more handsome than us? More intelligent than us? Taller than us? More educated than us? More civilised than us? Richer than us? All of us? What? What? What?
How come I have an inferiority complex when I can trace my descent to the first family of all Ewes, when all Ewes were united under one leader in Nigeria to Ketu to Tado, before they broke up and some arrived at Nortse and my ancestor Kpone was still made one of their leaders before he even became the first Awoamefia of the Dogbo splinter group known today as the Anlos? So to whom am I inferior? How can I have inferiority complex when my ancestors fought all comers, including the Danes and English, and what you won't find in the history books thanks to the taboos that sealed the peace, even the Asantes and destroyed the invading army totally? Oh! Go to Manhyia and ask about the meaning of se wo kum apem, apem beba whatever, not that I believe you'd be told even if someone knew! Every true Anlo who knows his or her onion knows about that. Not ignorant, boastful and foolish Asantes like you and your ilk! Maybe Kwabena Akurang-Parry, the so-called historian, who has been parading himself as Akadu the sociologist, also came across the puzzle/riddle just like Wilks and others but couldn't break it too. The man is just an ignorant scum of no consequence like you too. I'll break the code and the taboos for you one of these days. Send me you email and I'd fwd to u a picture of one of my direct forebears sitting in prime place at one of the Grand Palavas at Dzelukope after the Sagrenti War of 1874. Yes, how can I feel inferior and to whom when a family member with my surname sat in the LegCo from 1916-42, when he retired due to old age? And when S. Africa was getting Apartheid, my father was made the Administrative Manager of John Holt Bartholomew with over 20 British under him, not to mention the 100s of Africans? He bought his Mercedes from the proceeds of his private accountancy firm which he owned jointly with a British partner before accepting on contract to work for the CPP in 1960. He was like a British expat who was left behind after indep. and they never even paid him all his entitlements before he died in 1982 just bcos of envy! Yes, we have judgement debts to claim against Ghana, you know?
Sarpong, so which dog and bitch born you at all? My mother gave birth to 8 of us. 5 of us have tertiary education. Two of my siblings are lawyers, one just retiring as Chief State Attorney not long ago. One, my junior, was the Local Manager for Ghana Re-insurance Company in the '90s before resigning to found his own insurance brokerage company. At the time, he was the most qualified insurance practitioner in the whole of Ghana! It didn't stop The Chronicle for targeting him and the Manager, who just happened to be an Ewe too, proclaiming that tribalism led to the two topmost there being Ewes! Tweah! He wasn't even happy being there, claiming that young guys he was training were leaving to the private insurance coys and taking double his pay, so he left too! Jealous bastards! Some inferiority complex indeed! Is it bcos we don't boast like you blokes?
You don't know a damn thing about me, so your purported insults directed at me simply exposed you for the scum that you are. In the past, I'd ask the Asantehene for your head, and since you are no doubt a descendant of a slave, I'd get it! But times have changed and uncouth and unbred kubolors who have hustled your ways from one country to another to reach America can come to Ghanaweb and insult by heart pple for superior than you in intellect, education, class, upbringing, mention it.
Nkrumah is not in your class! And I am not in your class! Being in your company makes me feel dirty! But as my paternal grandmother used to say, if you join the company of children, one joins the company of flatulence! So, I don't blame you, I blame myself. But, I bring myself into your gutter for the sake of the truth and sanity in Ghana.

A benevolent dictator can only be found in a book of fiction. They don't exist anywhere. Becareful of what you wish for.
A Dictator's rule begins more often than not as an imposition, through the barrel of the gun. A dictator may also begin his rule as a constitutionally elected president, gradually making changes to the constitution until he gains absolute power. Remember that absolute power corrupts absolutely and dictators have never been known to go away that easily. As imperfect as it is
democracy remains the best form of government. The maxim"practice makes perfect" is also true for democracy. The faster we learn the better for us but learn we must. We have only ourselves to blame if we refuse to learn or learn too slowly. No matter how long it takes to master the art of self rule it is worth the effort and the time invested. When Nkrumah was seeking to gain the right to rule he said to the British :"It's better for a people to rule or misrule themself (ie. sovereignty/democracy) than to be ruled by another (colonialism/dictatorship). No, no country deserves any form of dictatorship!

Its the best he was overthrown, than being maintained,to rule with iron hands.
I never liked his YOUNG PIONEER MOVEMENT,since kids were moulded into spies and informants of their their leaders,to be reported to NKRUMAH.
There was no freedom of speech,AND THAT ALONE,WAS A BAD THING FOR THE COUNTRY'S DEVELOPMENT,FREEDOM,JUSTICE AND PEACE.
Yes,Nkrumah was an eye-opener,discerner,but a crook as well.
His bid and desire to send Ghana into COMMUNISM,was the very reason that saw his end.
Imagine,Ghana were to be still a communist state, what do you think,we might have achieved, considering EUROPE in the north and AMERICA/CANADA in the west of Ghana?

Justice Sarpong, get it stick in your mind that the great President Kwame Nkrumah did not ban any party. Your ancestral party, United Party, then in opposition just boycotted parliament when they could not match the political strength of Nkrumah in parliamentary proceedings and vacated their seats to use gullible Ghanaians to throw bombs to kill or maim innocent people at gatherings. As if that was not enough, they later left the country to solicit anti-Ghanaian help from abroad to intensify their subversive activities.
Meanwhile, Nkrumah, anxiously wanting to develop Ghana could not wait further to deliberate policies with politically inefficient United Party (UP)members in parliament, tabled a one-party system bill which, sole aim generally, sought determination on political and economic matters centrally in parliament to enable him to carry on with the job as matter of urgency to thwart the country's enemies efforts to slow its progress.
It was his book entitled 'Neo-colonialism the Last Stage of Imperialism' where he tackled and exposed the iniquities and exigencies of corporate business and conglomeration, which brought in enemies from United States which, ultimately, helped UP saboteurs to dethrone him in his absence, and that's cowardly act.
Justice Sarpong, so, sheer incompetency on the part of the UP leadership that made them and their partners-in-crime to flee the country and caused Nkrumah to introduce democratic centralism in parliamentary siting; indeed, some UP members joined the arrangement. Nkrumah did not ban their party.

Some of us were born around the time he was overthrown. Honestly the best was to have had another democratically elected government. You can only dream on about what Nkrumah could have done to Africa. But ask yourselves, which African leader managed to support democracy after they had come into power. Look at the idiot Mugabe and what he has done to Zimbabwe. And let us not delude ourselves Nkrumah would have been perhaps the same or maybe worse than Mugabe. Yes he started well but sadly all the writings were on the wall from history that he was heading the wrong direction. Unfortunately the Military through Acheampong did not endear themselves and we had the mess that followed. The only shining star post democracy in Africa has been Madiba and I am certain Nkrumah was not ever going to allow a democratic government without him being at the helm. Very sad for he Blackman and Africa. We deserve better.

He made children spies to spy on their own parents.
Nobody could criticize him without being imprisoned for life.
The one radio station and one TV station started their programs with praises of Nkrumah failure to do so will land one in prison for scores of years.
A lot of people died at Nsawam and were buried in unmarked graves without their families knowing where they were buried.
People became blind in prison by maltreatment.
Teachers, farmers, students, civil servants etc were arrested and imprisoned just for complaining about high cost of living.
Now tell me if Nkrumah was not worse than Jammeh.

Kwame Nkrumah is the main reason why Ghana as a nation is not developing. He cursed Ghana and said "the Independence of Ghana will be meaningless until the total liberation of all African unity". Now, African nations are not united and that means Ghana is still under Nkrumah's curse. He misused our hefty moneyt given us by the British and gave our money to Mali, Egypt, Guinea, Bening, etc at a time the whole Ghana was filthy, dirty with no toilets, no water, no electricity, lack of schools, colleges, churches, market places, no good roads, no food for consumption, lack of jobs....yet this show boy, Nkrumah used dictatorship to disrespect our chiefs, leaders of his own CPP and misruled Ghana with evil mind.
He was a greedy man who was burnt on becoming president and that is why he disrespected the leaders of UGCC, those who paid for him and brought him to Ghana. UGCC's leaders such as J.B.Danquah, Busia, Ofori Atta, Akuffo Addo, Obetseby Lamptey, Arko Adjei.....had all started the independence fight against the British. It was not Nkru,ah who came to start oir independence but because so many Ghanaian history professors hate Akans, thse criminally minded history writer have diluted Ghanaian history with lies, deceit, and cheer stupidities.
If he was alive today, I would have prosecuted him for having caused financial loss to the state of Ghana. During his era, the population of Ghana was a mere 3.5-4.5 million people in Ghana and the British left Ghana 3.7 billion pounds. Thus, couldn't have he used this big money given Ghana in 1949 through 1957 to develop Ghana?
It is only in Ghana that no one is allowed to criticized Kwame Nkrumah and it is due to so many foolish people in Ghana. They don't learn.

Today, our stupid leaders are in Ivory Coast to see how they can hand over our destiny to the imperialists, something Nkurumah could never envisage.
I prefer a life time president who is not corrupt and committed to building this country so that its citizens live in dignity in it to a mere democratic process of changing thieves to rule us and destroy us further, sending both the old and the young into Western countries to clean toilets and bath corpses like the Ahoofe Akaompas do in America and live under unacceptable conditions.

Cardinal of truth is phenomenal with exactitude of liars. The only people in this World who show their impudent and gorgeous butts by shouting with no compassionate love for Kwame Nkrumah are some people when in a crowd can't see over the heads others in the group. You mentioned so many World class African leaders without saying how they braided Kwame Nkrumah ideas with the latest head styles. Your Babylonian consciousness is nothing but egocentric foibles Mr. Kwame Nkrumah will never die because his ideas stand as TALL as the timber tree in the forest. Like it or not his alluring and provocative ideas continue to linger in the minds of all African leaders. They gave and continue to give him his accolade. Who cares about some nincompoops in the entire World who continue with their sanctimonious eulogies or negativities of his achievement and contributions to mankind. People without moral compass think cagey about what Nkrumah had done for Ghana.

Sarpong, need we continue this debate ad infinitum? To me, the Nkrumahists and the anti-Nkrumahs, like you, are too polarized to consider any mitigating circumstances or the relevant contexts under which either side of our early Politics behaved in the way it did.
It would have been fair for you to factor in the violent Opposition that Nkrumah had to deal with in your piece. Why did you leave that out? Whether Nkrumah was naturally disposed to be dictatorial or not, the case can always be made that he was driven to become one by the Opposition's savagery and relentless efforts to assassinate him. Those violent Opposition tactics began way before Nkrumah's dictatorial behavior surfaced.
Now, you seem to have inadequate knowledge of how Mobutu's dictatorship was born. It is laughable to blame that on Nkrumah. One very important element that we often fail to give any serious thought to when it comes to assessing these African Dictators is their temporal existence, which gives a significant context to why they most likely resorted to their undemocratic governance.
We would all admit that Dictatorship is unacceptable, all things being equal. But we cannot also deny that in cases of emergency, that may be the only way a Nation could survive or continue in its best interests.
If that is not the case, we would have to condemn the Houphouet Boignys, the Lee Kuang Yews, the Arabic Monarchs and other similar Despotic regimes all over the World in one big sweep.
However, we do not see the loudest proponents of Democracy in the World, the USA, from whom the anti-Nkrumah blabbermouths, (your verbiage), often claim to be inspired by, condemn these folks. At least, not until any of such Heads of State begin to thumb their noses at the West or USA.
We have to be honestly pragmatic, and objectively analyze these Historic entities in the proper contexts, even as we criticize some of their actions.
By the way, I did not see any cogent analysis that Casely-Hayford made to prove his cause with that piece. Only those who know his background and cherish the truth would understand best where he was coming from and going to with that piece.
To even suggest that Nkrumah was the first Dictator in Africa exposes your utter bias.
