The issue of democracy is one of value judgement at any point of time in history.
Democracy at Nkrumah's time has changed to where we are today worldwide. Democracy is divine and great.
Nkrumah was a product of his time: freedom fighter, developer and a disciplinarian meeting the needs of milk and butter, and independence from imperialism of his people.
The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of Africa.
Nkrumah believed in freedom and the dignity of humankind: no personal political gains as preached by his opponents seeking personal gains for themselves.
All coups are unlawful. Nkrumah did not come into politics by coup but by the election of the people.
Ghana and Africa are still under colonial domination frowned upon by Nkrumah and the United Nations: look are the power, water, health and sanitation, the declining value of the Cedi, quality of education and unemployment in Ghana today as evidence of colonial domination and trap for unwary Africans.
Nkrumah was against all that. Mr Sarpong cannot justify his disrespect for Nkrumah to justify coups and dictatorship in Ghana and the world.

Really? He then had a funny way of showing that by detaining and adopting policies that that denied freedom of speech to Ghanaians. Nkrumah apologists when you criticize his PDA policy usually come out with the defence that he did that when people tried to assasinate him but the PDA was passed in 1958 before any attempt was made on his life.
Dr Glah, there is no secret that I am a Danquah-Busiah adherent but have always said that Nkrumah economically did more than any President we have had albeit the fact that he was more resourced and had the opportunity to do that than any other President.
Second, I respect the man for the mere fact that, he personally was not corrupt though some of his Ministers and his illiterate DCE's were thieves.
Third, the man was patriotic, no denying of that fact.
At the same time as human being, he made a lot of mistakes. Some of his economic reasons brought shortages in commodities, massive unemployment, inflation and others but what really did him in was the hasty political decisions.
1. PDA
2. One party system
3. President for life.
I don't believe any President should be removed by coup because the economy is not meeting expectations as long as the populace has the chance to exercise their right through voting.
The only reason I support the Nkrumah overthrow is not the economy, PDA or one party state.
One reason that makes the 1966 coup unique and legitimate is that, Nkrumah made himself President for life and took the rights of voters away by not allowing them their God given right to choose their leader.
Dr, give me a reason why Nkrumah was right to declare himself President for life because nobody so far for the years I have been in this forum have been able to defend that.

Now here is the zinger. Had Nkrumah, not offered himself as president for life, which he did, Ghana could not have afforded elections with the way the opposition was influenced by foreign entities. Where do you the the economic re-uptake under Kufuor and Mills escaped? Did you know Mahama spend it all to campaign against the NPP'S well endowed campaign fund generated by Kufuor and co? Our last election with an incoming oil economy was the most expensive ever in our history. Tell me where all the money came from. We cannot afford to be bankrupt as a country after every election. And mortgage our future and remain underdeveloped forever! Common sensible people if you choose to be counted must find ways to deliver cheaper and fair elections to forestall our re-enslavement. We cannot govern ourselves on foreign financed elections, we will auctioning our democratic dispensation and will be indented citizens for others interests. That cannot be democracy, because we will be always seeking campaign funds from others or steal from our own coffers. Bro, carry this synthesis a little further you will unravel the reason why most countries at various points of their history develop faster under their authoritarian leaders. Examples being South Korea, Malaysia, and Russia etc. Nkrumah among the very few U.S trained in our country at the time, knew more about democracy, than the imperialist opposition. Ponder on that, whatever your mandate is without bias. Synthesis not insults can bring us answers to these embarrassing engagements and present the necessitated outline. "In a democracy we all have a right to our own mistakes, it is the so called make my country ungovernable miasma that is abhorrent to reason."

I am even surprised people like you are comparing EU to what Nkrumah wanted. EU which is like AU which Nkrumah helped to bring about has been a total failure.
Nkrumah wanted to make Africa as one country with him as President. EU does not have European President.
AU is more than 30 years older than EU but look at what it has achieved compared to our own Africa union which is a sham and annual get together by Africa leaders to party and engage in empty speeches unlike European unin which adopt and enact economic policies relevant to their members.

Good morning SARPONG. Found your article interesting and just want to dispute two of your conclusions. I doubt whether one could scientifically draw any objective conclusion on how popular the overthrow of a government in Ghana was by the mere public response from the citizens. I say so because to the best of my knowledge, Ghanaians have massively demonstrated in favour of all the military d'état in the country. For this reason I dispute your conclusion that the massive support by people from all walks of life to the 1966 coup was a measure of how popular the coup was. If your conclusion is accurate, then all the coups in Ghana have been massively popular.
The second one is in your concluding paragraph and I quote, "it is my considered opinion that the democratic wave of freedom blowing all over the nation for all and sundry to enjoy dates far back to the coup that was staged by Kotoka and Afrifa". I also disagree with you on this because the current democratic wave in Ghana cannot be isolated from the global geopolitical development in the last three decades. That is, the end of the cold war, the fall of communism in the Soviet Union and its satellite states in Eastern Europe and the birth of the so called new world order, which also ended the apartheid system did also bring about the demise of oppressive regimes, one party states and brought in multi-party politics and democratic governments in Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America and other areas of the world which hither to were under undemocratic governments. Had the 1966 coup ushered in a wave of democratic dispensation in Ghana then Busia's government should not have been overthrown, neither should there have been June 4 (AFRC) and 31 December 1981 (PNDC).
I will not debate the rest of the points/conclusions you drew not for want of ideas or arguments but perhaps for the fact that I was too young to know the facts. What I know now is through education.

THE CIA DID NOT CARE ABOUT DE MARTIN LUTHER KING AND HIS FIGHT FOR BLACK PEOPLE, WHY WOULD THEY CARE ABOUT BLACK AFRICANS? THEY WERE TERRIFIED OF AFRICANS UNITING. THEY KNEW THIS THING COULD BECOME A REALITY. THEY COULD NOT EXPLOIT US ANYMORE. THEY WERE AFRAID.
HERE WAS ONE BLACK AFRICAN THEY COULDN'T BUY. ONE BLACK MAN WHO CARED ABOUT AFRICA. THEY HAD TO GET RID OF HIM QUICKLY. BY ANY MEANS NECESSAY NKRUMAH HAD TO GO.
THEY WOULD KEEP GREEDY DICTATORS LIKE MOBUTU IN POWER.THE GREEDY AFRICAN LEADERS THEY CAN CONTROL THEY KEPT IN POWER. THEY DID NOT CARE ABOUT DEMOCRACY IN AFRICA. THEY WANTED US UNDER THEIR CONTROL.
AFRIC COULD HAVE BECOME A SUPERPOWER.
NKRUMAH WAS WAAAAAY AHEAD OF HIS TIME. HE WANTED TOO MUCH FOR AFRICA. TODAY, AFRICA IS WERE THEY WANTED US, DIVIDED AND WEAK.

THE CIA POLICY WAS TO GIVE A DOG A BAD NAME AND HANG IT. AFTER NKRUMAH WAS OVETHROWN,THE MISINFORMATION STARTED AND THE CIA WAS GOOD AT THIS GAME. YOU WOULD NEED A LIBRARY OF CONGRESS TO CONTAIN ALL THE NEGATIVES THEY SAID ABOUT NKRUMAH. THEY EVEN SAID HE DRANK THE BLOOD OF BABIES.
POLITICAL UNITY OF AFRICA WOULD HAVE MADE AFRICA A GIANT AMONG NATIONS. THE MAN DREAMT TOO BIG AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM OF GREAT ACHIEVERS. THE MAN WHO DREAMT THAT MAN CAN FLY WAS SEEN AS A LUNATIC BY THOSE WITH NO VISION. IT IS ALWAYS O IN HISTORY.
AFRICAN UNITY, TO MANY SMALL THINKERS WAS UNATTAINABLE. MAN HAS BEEN TO THE MOON AND BACK. AFRICAN COULD HAVE MADE IT. IT IS AFRICA'S ONLY HOPE.

Academics and intellectuals who were opposed to Nkrumah were commissioned to falsify and distort the nation’s history to depict Kwame Nkrumah as a ‘thief,’ ‘illiterate,’ ‘immoral,’ even satanic.” He concludes: “That was a poisonous strategy to mis-educate and mislead succeeding generations about the true stature of Kwame Nkrumah, the Founder of the State of Ghana (See Kofi B. Quatson’s “The Man Nkrumah: Those Who Betrayed Him”).
Other scholars still feel history has vindicated Nkrumah (See Rodney Worrell’s book “History Has Vindicated Kwame Nkrumah”). Eric Walberg, a world-famous Canadian journalist, sees Nkrumah as the “greatest African” (See his essay “Kwame Nkrumah: The Greatest African”).

A monkey one day managed to break free from the laboratory where he had been born and brought up.
As he scurried away from the fencing of the compound, he felt grass under his little feet and saw the dawn breaking for the first time in his life.
"Wow, this is great," he thought. It wasn't long before he came to a hedge and after squeezing under it he saw a wonderful sight.
Lots of other monkeys, all free and nibbling on bananas. "Hey," he called. "I'm a monkey from the laboratory and I've just escaped.
Are you wild monkeys?" "Yes. Come and join us," they cried.
Our friend trotted over to them and started eating the bananas. It tasted so good. "What else do you wild monkeys do?" he asked. "Well," one of them said. "You see that field there? It's got carrots growing in it. We dig them up and eat them." This, he couldn't resist and he spent the next hour eating the most succulent carrots. They were wonderful.
Later, he asked them again, "What else do you do?" "You see that tree there? It's got papayas growing in it. We eat that as well." The papayas tasted just as good and he returned a while later completely full. "It's fantastic out here in the world" he told them. "So are you going to live with us then?" one of them asked. "I'm sorry, I had a great time but I can't." The wild monkeys all stared at him, a bit surprised. "Why? We thought you liked it here." "I do," our friend replied. "But I must get back to the lab. I'm dying for a cigarette'

And yet, he left behind, among other things, the largest man-made lake, creating a powerful hydro-electric system… a flotilla of fully-owned merchant ships plying the high seas. He left behind a shinning piece of iron in the air, called GHANA AIRWAYS…a giant modern harbor and a super-highway linking the capital, Accra, and Tema ….you name the rest!
Outside his realm, he inspired. incited and helped a whole continent free itself from colonialism.. The Organization of African Unity… African Development Bank? Economic Commission for Africa…WHOSE IDEA WERE THEY??
And yet, some of his ideas and proposals are now starkly staring in the face of Africa:
1.Africa High Command, where elite armed forces from each country of Africa would be trained for rapid deployment for peace-keeping in trouble spots!
2.Economic Commission for Africa,(as mentioned above) where African products would be traded in the world, PRICED BY AFRICANS..not by white man in London or in New York, as it is today!
A dictator who died without a “penny” in a foreign bank…? Has there ever been an infallible leader, king, president, emperor, etc. Show me one? And so, I keep on saying: THERE WAS NONE, THERE IS NONE, AND THERE WILL BE NONE WHOSE FEET COULD FIT NKRUMAH’S SHOES.
By the way, has this nonentity creep called sarpong,(perpetually trying to aggrandize himself by insidiously and furtively trying to vilify and destroy the image of Nkrumah by proxy) ever heard of “PATRIOT ACT” and its implications in the very Houston slums where he lives?

One of the greatest among the many gifts Dr.Kwame Nkrumah bestowed on most of us the generation who lived during his era was patriotism, and love of country, eschewing ethnocentric tendencies. We never saw each others as Ewes,Ashantis,Fantes Akwapims Dagatis Dagombas etc whilst the same thing could not be said of our parents who saw everything through the prism of tribe blood relations.
It is funny how some people try to distort history by saying tribalism started with former president Rawlings.
Trying to re-write history is a fruitless exercise.
I do not have time to delve into the so called balanced argument about Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's reign.
If for argument sake one can justify the 1966 coup-detat,then there could be justification for the fate that befell both Kotoka and Afrifa at the end.
I have said this and I will say it again that, both Kotoka and Afrifa were motivated by power and greed. They were paid for doing the CIA's bidding and were handsomely paid for their betrayal of our beloved Ghana. This act debunks any argument of both men being heroes who rescued Ghanaians from dictatorship.
The entire NLC regime were a bunch of stooges with Kotoka and Afrifa being greedy bastards.
They deserve what came to them later in life.
Kotoka was a damned traitor period.

Nkrumah essentially was a modernizer who wanted to free his beloved country and continent from the tentacles of European imperialism. And here, judging from your writings, I do not think you have any clue what or where I am trying to direct your mind. I would first of all advise you to obtain for yourself a nice dictionary of politics and if you so ndesire I will be glad to offer you a list of books to read to give you a better worldview as an African. Mr Sarpong, when you say things like Nkrumah was training mercenaries to overthrow other governments in Africa it confirms your total cluelessness of events in our country let alone Africa and the world. You did not say whether you had read some world history or on imperialism, colonialism and/or neo-colonialism. If you haven't, then I better stop the conversation because nothing that I say will convince you. But I will proceed to answer your question. As I said in my last posting, Nkrumah was essentially a modernizer. He had brought independence and freedom to an otherwise stone-age people, so to speak. What would he want to do with that newly-won freedom? Was it his intention to boot out the British and amass wealth for himself and forget the rest of the population? I believe he could easily have done that given the record of many post-independence African leaders. Or was it his intention to propel his people into the twentieth century and beyond? He chose the latter option. This choice entails a lot of thinking, wisdom and courage but also a lot of power-wielding. If there had been a general consensus among the leadership of the population of the need for and the direction of the modernization process, then half the job would have been accomplished. Unfortunately for Nkrumah he faced a stubbornly backward opposition whose outlook was tribal and elitist, not national, and worse were willing tools of the same imperialism that we had just extricated ourselves from. They made the first attempt on his life as early as 1958. They sent delegations to Great Britain and the United States to try and dissuade their governments from giving technical assistance toward the building of the Akosombo dam, which was supposed to be the backbone of our development efforts. The attempts on his life necessitated the introduction of the Preventive Detention Act. Yes, Nkrumah was right in declaring himself President for life because there was no one within the leadership of the country with the vision and the foresight to carry through the economic transformation that he had started. The Ideological Institute was necessary for the same reason, to breed and educate the next generation of anti-imperialist leaders who would guard the country's independence against the forces of neo-colonialism and imperialism. I wish Nkrumah had led Ghana for a double lifetime.

This is an apt summation of Nkrumah's megalomaniacal view of himself. He became a brutal dictator because he arrogantly thought he had brought independence to " a stone age people."
This "tweaa kai; I am not your co-equal" attitude explicitly explains why the 1966 coup was the best thing that happened in the country.

Where is the megalomania in Nkrumah's personality? Will a megalomaniac offer free education and free medical care to all his countrymen? If you say Nkrumah was a megalomaniac, then you are sadly placing him in the category of the Mobutu's and the Houphouet-Boigny's and the Bokassa's of Africa. Look at what has happened to those countries since their leaders passed. My friend,it is the enduring legacy of Nkrumah's progressive policies that Ghana, in spite of its brutalization by and corruption of military adventurists, still stands, albeit wobbly.

This is another simplistic piece glamourising the naivety of Ghanaians. Perhaps this writer needs to ask some more soul-searching questions, at least from hindsight, e.g.
1.Was the “crisis” that led to Nkrumah’s overthrow internal to Ghana or from external forces outside Ghana, or both?”
2. Would there have been a coup if Ghana had a “positive” opposition rather than a “negative” opposition that not only connived and undermined its own government but co-operated with external forces to destabilise the country?
3. Is dictatorship per se bad or good? Whatever your answer just remember that China is still a dictatorship and the Americans, the so-called "free country" owe them trillions of dollars; Lee Kwan Yew was a dictator and Singapore is today a very prosperous country, and Ghana is still wallowing in poverty, ignorance and disease.
4. Would Ghanaians have rejoiced if they understood the forces at play to destroy Nkrumah's government, and for that matter their country and the liberation of the black man from colonialism and imperialism?
5. Was Nkrumah a born dictator or created by circumstances?
6. How do you reconcile the fact that even in the 21st century Nkrumah's ideas are still respected with your condemnation of the Young Pioneers Movement and the Ideological Institute which were institutional machanisms to impart his ideas for the good of Ghanaians and the Black man in general?
From hindsight, if we are unable to make a critical appraisal of what happened to us as a people in our history and change our cause for greatness there can only be one explanation for it: Either what unfolded was too complex for us to understand and make an intelligent response to it or we are too afraid to face the truth. Either way we are not better off.

Mr. Sapong, what is free speech to an ignorant hungry society.
You smartly dismiss the the argument of Kotoka and Afrifa corrupting their morals and exposing their greed by taking millions from CIA by being dismissive. That to me puts your democratic principles into question.
To you the end justifies the means which is unfortunate.
Even ALQEADA believes in that principle because they consider the western democracies to be their oppressors.
For both Afrifa and Kotoka to be paid by the CIA proves motive for organizing a coup-detat. And for w hat we know, it wasn't the believe in the democratic principles but were stomach military men.
If the argument can be made for the justification of violence in certain situations, then Afrifa and Kotoka shouldn't be an exception and that they deserve what they got.
After all Dr. Kwame Nkrumah never got corrupted in his believe. He stood for his principles to the end and posterity is judging all of parties involved.
No wonder we have greedy bastards conning and dividing us in the so called free society. Poor us.
By the way I still follow you on this forum and as much as I disagree with you on many fronts, I admire you for standing for something and defending it. That is what standing for one's core principles is about.

Nkrumah achieved the following in Ghana:
• Had a plan – 7 year development plan
• Akosombo Hydro Electric Scheme
• Black Star Shipping Lines
• Ghana Airways
• Several Industries – GIHOC, STEEL WORKS, etc
• Country on a mission
Nkrumah failed in the following areas in Ghana:
• Suppressed freedom of speech
• Prevention Detention Act
Nkrumah achieved the on the African Continent:
• Respect for the African race
• OAU now the African Union ( AU is still trying struggling with what Nkrumah wanted to do. The United States of Africa with a strong voice at the UN)
• Proposed to have the Africa High Command,( i.e. a pool of trained Armed Forces from Africa countries available for rapid deployment)
• Proposed an African Single Currency
• Proposed a single language for Africa
• Total Liberation of Africa
What did the Kotoka/Afrifa Coup achieve?
• Joy to the Imperialist
• Disruption of our agenda: country or continent on the move. We are now a country without a plan and a continent unable to feed itself. From Somalia all the way down to Zimbabwe
• Inability to even maintain some of the infrastructure he developed- ie Accra Tema Motorway
• Prevention Detention Act
• Perception that CIA was involved. There is now ample evidence that CIA operatives went to the Atomic Energy Commission at Kwabenya after the coup to carry out their dirty tricks.

The consistent braying, bleating and barking of the Nkrumahist donkeys, sheep and dogs comprise one further indication of the brain atrophy of these cultic mongers and ideological monsters. Thus apart from their usual apoplectic tantrums, none can point out any lie in my articles nor coherently debate any salient issue I have so far raised.
And so in abject frustration and searing rage, these Nkrumahist ideologues, action troopers, young pioneers, republican guards, praise singers, and death squads, with gnashing teeth and contorted visage, snarling and howling with air so foul, tearing their clothing in a fit of sacred rage, invoking dark curses from Kankan Nyame, ruing the glorious days of PDA, days of incarceration without trial, when the Fountain of Honor's word was law, when the redeemer dictated lore and gave them their folklore, ask with screeching voices and husky tones , when will you join our retinue of perpetual praise singers? When will you poke your eye-balls in order to bray our chorus of blind loyalty, or expectorate your brain matter in order to bleat our allegiances preserved for these donkey years? When will you be like us, unthinking, unquestioning, unfeeling, un-testing, and un-examining?
My answer...the day you will tell me of my lies in this series of articles; of the things I have alleged here that are not true: tell me that Nkrumah was not the recipient of others’ benevolence, tell me that he did not repay them with imprisonment, tell me that there was no PDA, tell me that there was no imprisonment without trial, tell me that there was no removal of the franchise, nor declaration of one party state nor life president!
Nkrumah did a nice job by screwing up his followers’ brains, but the extent of their brain atrophy is far more than initially thought or ever imagined when seen within the lenses of his followers’ incoherent expletives in substitute to genuine debate. No doubt, for another three hundred years, these somnambulist acolytes and their children's children's heads will remain deep-frozen with the shibboleth of Nkrumahism; they can never think, never debate, never reason….. . They come from an ideological proclivity to whom the Osagyefo is a saint and god, a proclivity that makes them bury their heads in the sand and see nothing wrong, hear nothing wrong and say nothing wrong about the Great Redeemer.
When the issue of Nkrumah’s dictatorship is raised, all that the eternal minions do is to claim that the 1966 coup was CIA inspired. This begs the question of Nkrumah’s tyranny and consigns the wisdom of the popular masses that thronged the streets in jubilation into a deep-freezer. We could then argue that the CIA inspiration was a welcome intervention in the destiny of a people taken into hostage by a brutal dictator and thank the CIA for its work of liberation. Once the issue of Nkrumah’s dictatorship is confirmed, the manner of his overthrow is moot.
Also, they invoke American democratic credentials vis-a-vis its history of oppression to justify Nkrumah’s dictatorship. How the American democratic credentials impinge on Nkrumah's tyranny beats my imagination. We are accusing the head of our household of child abuse, and you are pointing to another household and saying that the head is also guilty of child abuse. How relevant is that?
Besides, we must draw a distinctive dichotomy between the natural trajectory of democracy and its use as a mantra to oppress and subjugate others. If we understand democracy as an evolution towards perfection in government, we will understand how its existence is a means, but not the end of human freedom itself. Thereafter, we will not justify authoritarianism because of the existence of injustices within a democratic dispensation somewhere. Instead, we will inquire into our system of government to determine if it is headed towards the right or wrong direction…from dictatorship into democracy or vice versa. If it is the latter, it must be terminated by all means possible, and never be sanctioned by any freedom-loving people.
The difference between the 1966 coup that toppled Nkrumah and all the other coups that happened in Ghana is that whereas by 1966, Ghana was heading towards imminent dictatorship with its appurtenant life president, one party state and PDA, in 1972, 1979 and 1981, the nation was heading in the direction of a democratic dispensation, and there was no need to overthrow these governments. This is the reason why the 1966 coup is the only justified and justifiable coup in the history of Ghana.
I would agree that Nkrumah lived ahead of his time. His record in the provision of infrastructure, healthcare, education and employment has not been matched by any government...and I don't agree with those who diminish his achievements in this respect by pointing to the availability of money. This is because subsequent governments have not done what Nkrumah did even in proportion with the resources they had. Indeed, I would go to the extent of agreeing that Nkrumah was the greatest African of the past millennium, but Nkrumah's achievements in these respects do not transmogrify into a democratic credential. Neither do they negate the fact that he was a brutal dictator. Indeed, Nkrumah’s history is never complete without commensurate references to his authoritarian leadership. I am not afraid to praise Nkrumah; at the same time, I am not afraid to condemn him. But for a man whose mantra for Ghana's independence was freedom and justice, he should be judged by the promise of his own words, and nothing lower.
Instead of pointing to Western imperfections as an excuse to justify Nkrumah’s dictatorship, nothing stops us Africans from building a model democracy for the world to emulate. That is what Nkrumah failed to do, and that is what this conversation should be about. True or not: Was Nkrumah a dictator? Did he abridge freedoms as enumerated in my articles? If so, what was the legitimacy of his moral compass in calling for the freedom of the African continent when he denied freedom for his own people? And why must we, as a sovereign nation, entertain a tyrant whose evolutionary trajectory was towards total and absolute dictatorship?
And why must the threat on Nkrumah’s life become a conduit for the channeling of his dictatorial propensities? If the assassination of American presidents and the terroristic activities of religious fanatics did not permanently alter the sovereign rights of the American people, why should these same factors lead to the permanent abrogation of the people’s rights and the resulting dictatorship under Nkrumah’s regime? If all that a dictator needs is security threat to abrogate the rights of his people, that dictator will always find the security threat one way or the other in order to abrogate the rights of the people.
But the chronology of Nkrumah’s draconian laws exposes his natural propensity for insidious tyranny: the PDA was enacted in 1958 and gave the President the right to incarcerate a citizen without trial for five years. In 1962, the law was re-enacted to incarcerate a citizen of Ghana for a period of ten years without trial. Nkrumah also amended the Criminal Procedure Act to empower him to quash court's decision retroactively and prospectively.
And so when we say Nkrumah achieved independence for Ghana, the natural question is what type of independence? Was it about flags, coat of arms, a national anthem and other insignia of state? Was it about the mere transposition of white oppression to black oppression, and the rearrangement of the political play-actors to empower a cabal of black oppressors instead of a white one?
We cannot separate true independence from its core element which is the sovereignty of the people: their rights within the democratic dispensation and their freedoms enshrined in proper law and lore. Nkrumah’s destruction of this element of independence makes him an enemy, and not the father of Ghana’s independence. He saw independence through a jaundiced view of his personality cult, and bequeathed to the nation a generation of indoctrinated Ghanaian acolytes whose thoughts are forever warped and reasoning circumscribed to feed the great Nkrumahist mythology. All these people can do is to shout shibboleths in praise of Nkrumah, or to insult those who dare to criticize him.
The worst of these empty slogans and insults emanated from a Ghanaian professor of Political Science who wrote these words to me:
It is a shame that you pride yourself as a lawyer who is knowledgeable enough to condemn Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, whom the AU was more than proud to honor because of his good services to Ghana and Africa by erecting his statue at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa. What have you as an individual done for Ghana or Africa worth a historical notation? Yet you take pride in condemning Africa's most illustrious leader. As someone who has researched and understand the "politics" at the time of Ghana's struggle for self-rule and economic freedom, I take issue with your rather shallow political analyses vis-à-vis the contribution of Dr. Nkrumah to Ghana and Africa in the midst of CIA collaborators who wanted to derail our hard won freedom in the 1950's and 1960's. Best wishes.

Ayikwei Armah, Africa’s foremost prose stylist, in his book called “The Healers” describes a festival within a certain African community in which all the people engage in a race only to crown a single person as the winner deserving of all honor. A better trope and mythical construct cannot be found to describe the hero-worshipping of the political illusionist of all time, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the Fountain of All Honor! But it is the work of real scholars to scratch the foil from the core and analyze the myth in order to expose the truth.

Dr SAS, I have merely tried, maybe not enough, to narrate some of Ghana's historical truths, what happened, what event led to what etc. But you have also failed to address the issues I have raised. Such a long emotional ranting won't help you or anybody. Was it not true that the Danquah-led opposition made an attempt on Nkrumah's life in 1958? What might have caused them(believers in democracy to want to violently remove a duly elected Prime Minister and not through the ballot box? Was it not that same 'better than anybody else' syndrome you so love to tag on Nkrumah? Was it not true that the opposition tried and failed to torpedo the building of the Akosombo dam? Was it not true that Danquah told the British that the Gold Coast was not ready for independence in 1957 and the British ignored him? I am not a fan of the present ruling government in Ghana. I think it is an aberration for Ghana. But when the Danquah/Busia tradition is in power you call it a democracy despite all the abundant corruption. When somebody else is in power, you call it a dictatorship or worse megalomania. Well then I will dare say to you that those who laid the foundations of modern European democracy and prosperity were not democrats but absolute monarchs who brooked no nonsense from any quarter. What Nkrumah did for Ghana was well within our means to do to ensure our future prosperity after 113 long years of imperialist exploitation and repression. That is why you had free education that ironically allows you to condemn him. Unfortunately you have acquired too much CIA miseducation which has given you a faulty worldview as an African. Are we not all victims of CIA propaganda and misinformation?
