in our country the voice of reason can not be heard as the decision makers , stakeholders and politics are so polarized through tribalism and other mud slinging propaganda that the truth and common sense have become irrelevant . the ministry of agric is notorious for the the fact that the minister and chief director there are the most corrupt callous characters in the govt today. every nation that has achieved development has put in checks and balances that rectify mistakes or evil tendencies , our leaders first make sure these checks and balances are eliminated whether by declaring president for life or one party states like nkrumah did or by putting strange immunity or indemnity clauses in the constitution like rawlings did. if there is no accountability there can be responsibility and a vicious circle of corruption , disunity and open crimes are committed but none of this ruling oligarchy will ever be made to pay for their atrocities. our country and her citizens produce tens of billions but poverty is the daily lot of most of our citizens as the system of divide and rule has been perfected , our gold and other natural resources leave the country but no a single dollar comes back to benefit our people , our diaspora of over 10 to 15 million is not involved in development rather when they come they are financially raped by all from their own relatives with ridiculous demands for electronic gadgets and school fees to the state organized mafia institutions with tribally biased evil agendas . a nation not unified or focused on matters of national importance are doomed to failure . the quiet majority are being exploited and raped on a daily basis but due to the govt sponsored propaganda and lies are unable to see things clearly and act . yes we have a hopeless depressing future ahead due to our own laziness , non action and cowardice of thought. nobody is interested in investigating the truth for themselves or even questioning the most obvious crimes. jj has proclaimed k4 a corrupt individual yet after superpowers investigated they rewarded him by appointing him special envoy , jj will not go to jail for his false declaration rather in the madness and with his tribal hegemony chauvinistic support will be declared a hero and not for inciting hatred against another leader who will most likely end up in a pool of blood like mills .the tragedy is far from over as mahama and his lies only continue this trend , mr all talk and no action is busy taking us on another jolly ride to despair and hopelessness . the only solution is a cleansing war or revolution which will ensure that the country is divided up so we all get a fresh start , no point in fixing whats too broken to repair

Ghana is at the crossroads and it is becoming increasingly clear that, our debates and engagements need to move away from the narrow prism of party politicking, and on issues like this, evidenced based science, research and data as well as world renowned experts on these matters on both ends of the spectrum ie the advantages and disadvantages of the adoption of GMO's are sought and engaged intellectually, to choose a path much more favourable and beneficial to us as a people and as a race.
We believe that, the issue of GMO or as the gov't would term it, Plant Breeders Bill whose objective amongst other things is to ensure food security, is not in the best interest of the nation. The facts and the evidence, clearly do not support the popular position of the proponents of the adoption of GMO's, mainly because over the long term the deleterious effects of GMO's are much, much worse in terms of the safety and well being of the human being. The lobbyists would cite high yielding crops, abundance of food produce, less fertilizer applications etc, etc, but at what cost? That is the million dollar question and in spite of the popular opinion of the proponents that it is safe, does the evidence on the ground support this position? If it did, why is it that, the GMO's had not been adopted across board in far advanced countries but they are being rejected?
The problem with our food security does not have to do with the introduction of GMO's but rather, the adoption and investment in mechanized agriculture, investment in irrigation, the investment in the food supply value chain, to create employment and food sufficiency. We need to be very circumspective about this GMO's and not be led like the proverbial sheep to the slaughter house. Parliament should reject this bill which seeks to make Ghanaians guinea pigs effectively.

I have read your article with interest. I am not an Agricultural Scientist. My opinion is therefore based, purely on pragmatic social and economic issues 'on the ground'.
I think as a nation, we should try to answer the million dollar question, first! Why is the idea of GMO is not supported worldwide, especially in Europe, where scientific knowledge/research in the particular matter is quite? Why is it that crops from natural sources are much more expensive compared to similar GMO products, on shelves of supermarkets in Europe, i.e. the UK? Certainly, there are good reasons for placing higher value on the natural crops/products.
I believe that the problem of food security in Ghana is not about low production but issues pertaining to general management of the production, distribution/sales and storage. Anyone who is aware of periods of bumper harvests (For an example,; the cases of the tomatoes farmers of Agotime-Ziope District, of the Volta Region and also in the Brong Ahafo and Upper West Regions, etc. where crops got rotten for lack of suitable market and proper scientific means of storage), would understand the woes of the typical farmer and why there is probably no incentive to produce more food the subsequent farming seasons.
After all; what is the point of going GMO if all the progressive increase in food production would be left to waste/rot!
Government must therefore critically examine models of other countries and provide the necessary remedies to address the stated shortfalls to ensure the necessary food security.
I believe that there are ready markets out there for crops and other products from natural sources, elsewhere in the world and we may just be carving a niche for ourselves in such markets, if we encourage our current practice of natural means of production; instead of shooting ourselves in the foot by going the way of GMO, which many countries, especially in Europe are trying to avoid.

There're widespread public scepticism and unease of GMO's, not only in Ghana but throughout the world because of their potentially toxic effects on human health and the environment. There're alarming stories and independent research findings of possible adverse effects that make GMO's wholly unsafe. Of course, whether these stories and research findings could be termed as hysterical or genuine fears about GMO's, the Ghanaian Government and the Foods Standards Agency should take all necessary precaution and measures to protect the health of the nation by evaluating all scientific research findings before approving its production in Ghana.
Yes, Ghanaians are unwittingly eating GM foods on regular basis through some of our food imports. Then again, have we given thought to the increasing rise in diabetes and cancer cases in Ghana? Is there a possible link? For example, most of the imported canned tomatoes, rice, and wheat are genetically-modified.
The issue of GMO's in Ghana is far too important to be left in the hands of our "Genetically-Modified Politicians" and some few experts who for all you know, could be on the payroll of Monsanto, the Bio-tech giant.

I believe the problem in Ghana is not lack of information on GMO and the real intentions of Monsanto and others, rather, the willingness of Ghanaian politicians to sell the country for pittance. A Chinese company gave mobiles phones to MPs to get them to approve a loan worth millions of dollars. How on earth these MPs think of passing a bill that states that not even the Executive, Legislature or the Judiciary can question or challenge the rights and interests of Monsanto and others in Ghana? It's madness for them to sell the birth rights of all Ghanaians to foreign multinationals. The bill if passed without an amendment to that clause would mean the end of Ghana's sovereignty.

PLANT BREEDERS' BILL IS A 419!
"The absence of politics is the concrete analysis of a concrete situation." In that sense, Clause 23 of the Plant Breeders' Bill must be analysed dispassionately. Assuming that our Parliament must give specific rights to the Plant Breeder, why should the plant breeders' rights be independent of the laws of Ghana?
How come that even the human rights of the citizens of Ghana are subject to the laws of Ghana, but the rights of the plant breeder are above the laws of Ghana? The only explanation is that they do not want to be told even to label their Frankenstein products! They do not want us to be able to ban them even when it is proven to be harmful to our health!
The very fact that these people are asking us to pass such a law, after negotiating a "no roll-back (NRB) clause at the WTO Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights - TRIPS Agreement." This is certainly one of the most contentious points in the negotiations known as the "no-rollback" (NRB) clause. See: LDC TRIPS exemption approved with mixed reactions: /www.twnside.org.sg/title2/wto.info/2013/twninfo130606.htm
"23 MEASURES REGULATING COMMERCE
A plant breeder right shall be independent of any measure taken by the Republic to regulate within Ghana the production, certification and marketing of material of a variety or the importation or exportation of the material."
US officials must be more than aware of the WTO rules that they themselves helped to put into place. Under these rules, whilst Ghana may have the right to pass the law, we automatically lose any right to repeal or even amend it later on. This Bill, once passed, can never be revoked. According to the WTO rules, even if a Least Developed Country, LDC, introduces a TRIPS-compliant obligation on IP-protection, it would no longer be able to reduce that scope of protection, regardless of the fact that the LDC is not required to implement the agreement!

It is much easier for a medical doctor residing in the comfort of the US to advocate for the rejection of GMO's in Ghana. Considering the rate at which fertile farm lands have been mowed down in the name of development and urbanization, and the increasing cost of basic staple food in Ghana on the other hand, I would hesitate to join the chorus on advocating for the rejection of GMOs. Rather, I will encourage the debate to be shifted to how Ghana can adopt GMO's to suite it's unique needs. We will be doing a lot of harm to the millions of people who are malnourished and most of the time go to bed with hunger in Ghana. Many of such are those who do not even know where next meal is going to come from. To such folks we owe a duty from the comfort of the US to be broad minded when we join the debate and are displaying our academic credentials .

Is it possible that these millions who go to bed hungry live in urban areas or are unable to pay for the foodstuffs? It is not unusual to see people lined up to "beg for food" in places where GMOs have been adopted.

Commonsense. Yes, I say commonsense should tell us that if someone is trying to control your food, that someone is cunningly trying to annihilate you from the face of the earth.
Whites, no matter how we see them, always have something sinister against us. The started with Aids which did not produced the intended result and they have adopted another avenue targeting our food. Who can live without food?
No matter what people say about the abundance of GMO, there is something hidden behind it which is very dangerous to our wellbeing. The US, having adopted GMO is reeling under the pressure of cancer. US is the only advance nation where cancer is very common and they do not care because no matter how many people die, they will be replaced by the same number of new entrants who are "dying" to come and "toil-for-nothing" in this nation.
One day, I questioned a doctor about why cancer is so common in the US and his answer was "the food". He warned me to be very careful with some fruits etc. There is no basic reason as to why cancer is very, very common in the US and people act as if all is well which should not be the case.
If organic foods are expensive than GMO, why should we not concentrate on how we have been producing our food for generations than trying to import this GMO nonsense? What is wrong with us? Do we have people who can think outside the box? Are our leaders aware of the long term effect of GMO products? If yes, when did they use it and if no, why are they running to embrace it?

Dr. Martin, thanks for shedding some light on this serious topic that is before the parliament now. Can the ministry in charge of agriculture be able to tell the nation how much food products are produced annually, and how much are destroyed or gone to waste. Bad roads, old farming techniques, no direct ready government markets for these farmers are some of the reasons for food shortages.
We do not need these GMOs, if only our leaders could think outside the BOX sometimes. Just like the learned man said, the effects outweigh the so called benefits, so we hope the leaders should listen to reason and abandon these disease-ridden GMOs!!!
