"Unfortunately, Akan and Akan-language programmes seem to dominate our airwaves, leaving people from other ethnic groups no other option than to listen to those programmes. This explains the need for news-writers and/or presenters to use vocabulary or diction that reflects or takes into consideration the diversity of the entire Ghanaian population."

the problem with you in the minority tribes is your hatred of everything AKAN. You hide behind akan names as your pennames only to insult Akans. In Ghana, we have adopted ENGLISH, a foreign language, as our NATIONAL language. Since Independence, we have had equal minority leaders if not more. Yet, eventhough we could have adopted Twi which 96% of Ghanaians, speak and /or understand, and could have been economical and assimilating, our minority tribes keep jabbing the majority in everything we do. This is NOT fair because, there has not been any dictatorship from the majority tribes in Ghana. Ghana is the only land where there is much tolerance and accomodation among it´s tribes. So Akans do not need these kind of negative rabble rousing from those who have had their education through affirmative action taken by the Akan taxation- system. There are other LOCAL LANGUAGES on our radios, and if you hate Akan so much, just listen to your own language and leave Akans and their Akan jokes alone.

Thank you Emmanuel for this article. I have also made these observations, and I think managers of radio stations should give their newscasters especially those who read Akan, in-service training. How on earth can you read a news item for almost twenty minutes? I am an Asante, I've studied Asante from primary to the University, and the knowledge I have acquired makes me wonder whether some of these newscasters have really taken pains to learn the language? It is not the ability to saturate your news with proverbs that makes you a good Akan speaker. Sometimes, I get angry and flip my dial to another station. This is getting bad. My advice to those newscasters is that they should be professional.....
