This is the second time I have heard this guy talk about this thing without mentioning the modus operandi required to collect taxes from the informal sector.
And by the way, no coconut seller makes GHC1100 per month. And neither does any taxi driver make GHC1500 per month. Lets talk about things that are practical and stop the concerts that we call business conferences.
I live in the US and the taxi drivers pay taxes only if it will get them a refund from the government. Also, those in the non-formal sector understate their incomes.
If the formal sector in Ghana will pay the required taxes the government will get more than enough revenue.

the coconut sellers tax goes to fund government officials who rather live like kings. the informal sector must grow. allow them tax holidays so as to compete and give employment that is needed so badly.

We generally have do nothing governments who are only interested in padding their. I remember seeing informatin services when i was a school boy at Bogoso titled "Improvement At Kojokrom". A recalcitrant was persuaded to pay taxes when he saw his taxes put to good use. We do not see our taxes put to good use. The coconut and taxi driver would gladly pay taxes if they were convinced their tax money would be put to good use instead of padding pockets of individuals.

Every Ghanaian must be registered and required to produce a tax return each year. Foreign companies and foreign residents must also be roped in. A database must be maintained to this effect. The tax laws should be strengthened to this effect.
This would provide work for accountants and auditors, and help reduce unemployment.
