We've reached a point in Ghana where to use public transport particularly on long journeys is literally gambling with your life. We generally don't know if the driver is fit to be on the road because many "drivers" do not have a valid licence or may actually have one but never had certified driving lessons. Also many of the vehicles that ply our the road are not certified "road worthy". They are best described as DEATH TRAPS because they have worn out tires, have unreliable brakes that can suddenly fail, have no headlights or signaling lights that work. Perhaps the greatest menace to users of public transport is the utter contempt and disregard drivers have for traffic and road rules and regulations. These regulations are put in place to protect the general public.
THIS IS WHY THE PUBLIC MUST START EACH JOURNEY BY COLLECTIVELY INFORMING THE DRIVER THAT THEY WILL TAKE ACTION AGAINST HIM IF HE DRIVES IN A RECKLESS MANNER (Over speeding, reckless overtaking etc). Nighttime accidents caused by drivers falling asleep is another common cause of death and serious injury.
Fellow Ghanaians, we need to start speaking out against reckless drivers because they are killers.
