Private legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has called for greater respect for the rights of accused persons, arguing that Ghana will not collapse if the country adopts fairer bail practices and stops using the denial of bail as a form of punishment.

In a post shared on Facebook on September 27, 2026, Barker-Vormawor said the justice system must uphold the rights of accused persons, regardless of the nature of the allegations against them.

“Ghana will not collapse if we respected accused person rights. Ghana will not collapse if we sanitize bail rules and avoided using bail and its denial as punishment,” he stated.

Barker-Vormawor argued that denying bail should not become a substitute for punishment, emphasising the need for bail rules and their application to reflect fairness and respect for legal rights.

He further maintained that Ghana could pursue reforms in several areas without destabilising the country, including tackling bribery and ensuring fairness in public sector recruitment and procurement.

“Ghana will not collapse if we stopped paying and demanding bribes, Ghana will not collapse if public sector recruitments are fairly advertised and recruited on merit,” he indicated.

He also called for the digitalisation of court records, streamlined virtual filing processes and improvements in the efficiency of the court system.

“Ghana will not collapse if we intentionally make it fairer,” he said, urging Ghanaians to pray and actively work towards building what he described as a “new Ghana.”

His comments come amid broader concerns about the administration of justice and the treatment of accused persons, particularly in relation to bail and pre-trial detention.
