Rare archival footage from 1982 has surfaced showing schoolchildren singing songs about Ghanaian historical figure, Yaa Asantewaa, as they play at school.

The footage, shared by the Ghanaian Museum on X, offers a glimpse into how stories of Ghana’s past were passed on to younger generations through songs and play.

In the video, the children can be heard singing about Yaa Asantewaa while playing together, reflecting how her story had become part of the cultural memory of Ghanaian children at the time.

Yaa Asantewaa, the Queen Mother of Ejisu, is remembered for her role in leading the Asante resistance against British colonial rule during the War of the Golden Stool in 1900.

Historical accounts identify her as a key figure in the resistance after the British demanded the surrender of the Golden Stool, a central symbol of Asante identity and authority.

The 1982 footage provides a rare look at how that history was communicated outside formal classroom lessons, with children using songs as a way of learning and remembering the story of one of Ghana’s most prominent female historical figures.

The video has since attracted attention online, with many viewers reflecting on how Ghanaian history was taught and preserved through traditional forms of storytelling, music and children's games.

The Ghanaian Museum describes its work as preserving Ghana's history through rare archival footage, photographs and historical research.
