Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has stated that President John Dramani Mahama should have instructed the Attorney General to drop the charges against jailed TikToker Camilla Alhassan, who was sentenced to one year in prison by the Accra Circuit Court after pleading guilty to offensive conduct and the publication of false news.

According to him, after Camilla Alhassan realised her mistake and apologised, President Mahama should have followed the footsteps of the NPP flagbearer and forgiven her by allowing the Attorney General to withdraw the charges.

Speaking in an interview on a YouTube channel, Obiri Boahen further warned President Mahama to be vigilant in the running of his government.

“If I was President Mahama, I would have instructed the AG; Why don’t you withdraw the charges against her? Because what the lady did, she herself has regretted and all of us condemned her for the insult. She apologised and claimed that she was pregnant, which is a sufficient lesson. So why don’t you call the AG to withdraw the charges against her?

“So, I am saying, if Mahama is listening to me, he should have done that,” he said.

TikToker Camilla Alhassan was sentenced on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after admitting to publishing videos falsely claiming, without evidence, that President John Dramani Mahama buried 32 cows as part of rituals to win the 2024 general election.

Speaking after the ruling, her lawyer, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, said the court struck out the charge of electronic abuse, holding that it did not have the legal authority to determine that offence.

However, the court convicted Camilla on the count of offensive conduct and imposed a one-year custodial sentence.

According to her lawyer, the defence appealed for a lighter punishment, but the court indicated that the growing prevalence of such offences required a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to others.

The widely circulated videos led to Camilla Alhassan’s arrest and subsequent prosecution by the Ghana Police Service. Before sentencing, the court had also ordered a pregnancy test during an earlier hearing.
