The Office of the Attorney General has opposed the bail application filed by Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, pending the determination of his appeal against his conviction and sentence.

The Attorney General's opposition was contained in an affidavit filed on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in response to Wontumi's bail application.

Wontumi's lawyers on Friday, August 7, 2026, approached the High Court seeking an order to grant him bail while he pursues an appeal against his conviction and sentence.

However, the Attorney General is urging the court to reject the application, arguing that the grounds of appeal do not disclose any reasonable prospect of success.

The AG's Office challenged claims made by Wontumi in his affidavit in support of the bail application, maintaining that the grounds contained in his appeal were insufficient to establish that the appeal had a reasonable chance of succeeding.

"The grounds of appeal contained in Exhibit CB2, the appeal, contrary to the averments in paragraphs 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the affidavit in support of the motion, disclose no reasonable chance of success," the Attorney General stated.

The prosecution also raised concerns about Wontumi's ability to remain within the jurisdiction while his appeal is being pursued.

According to the AG, the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman poses a significant flight risk, a factor it wants the court to consider in determining whether to grant him bail.

"That contrary to the averments in paragraphs 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18 and 20 of the affidavit in support of the motion, the applicant constitutes a significant flight risk," the affidavit stated.

The bail application follows Wontumi's conviction and sentence, which he is challenging through an appeal.
