Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has suggested that military officers should be appointed to head state-owned institutions and enterprises, arguing that such a move would improve productivity and efficiency.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM, A-Plus proposed that key state institutions should be managed by carefully selected military personnel whom he described as disciplined, patriotic and hardworking.

“The President of Ghana should appoint military officers to head every state-owned institution or enterprise. For instance, COCOBOD, Ghana Gas and the Tema Oil Refinery should all be led by military officers. The Constitution requires that a certain number of ministers be appointed from Parliament. Once that requirement has been met, the remaining ministerial positions should be allocated to soldiers,” he said.

A-Plus also praised President John Dramani Mahama for assigning the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to undertake clearing works for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway project.

A-Plus challenges sustainability of national clean-up

He noted that more than half of the corridor, covering over 100 kilometres of the proposed expressway, has already been cleared by the military.

According to him, the progress made on the project demonstrates the efficiency and discipline of the armed forces.

The Gomoa Central MP added that there are many intelligent, hardworking and patriotic officers within Ghana’s security services who are capable of managing the country’s institutions effectively.

He argued that such individuals should be identified and entrusted with the responsibility of running state institutions in the country’s best interest.

“Although we practise democracy, every country must have its own form of it. Democracy in the United States is different from democracy in England, and the American model can never work in countries like Iraq or Libya. Democracy in Africa should not be a one-size-fits-all system,” he noted.

Touching on Burkina Faso’s political situation, A-Plus dismissed claims that the country’s leader, Ibrahim Traoré, is undemocratic.

According to him, democracy is ultimately about the will of the people, not only the process through which a leader assumes office.

He argued that if the people of Burkina Faso support Traoré’s leadership, then he should be regarded as democratic, regardless of whether he was elected through the ballot box, insisting that democracy is fundamentally about governance by the people.
