The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has revealed that some drug traffickers use ambulances and bullion vans to transport illegal drugs.

According to him, traffickers take advantage of the emergency status of ambulances and the priority passage often given to bullion vans to move drugs without attracting suspicion.

Speaking before Parliament's Government Assurances Committee on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Muntaka disclosed that security agencies recently intercepted an ambulance that was transporting cannabis instead of a patient.

"Can you imagine that an ambulance was coming and was blowing the siren? It was not carrying a sick person but it was carrying weed. When we tried to stop it, people said, 'No, it's an ambulance.' But when we eventually stopped it, lo and behold, it was carrying weed," he said.

He further disclosed that some traffickers conceal cannabis in bullion vans transporting cash from the Bank of Ghana.

"People use bullion vans carrying Bank of Ghana cash into cities, and while they are going, they carry weed. They will be blowing the siren and we open the way for them to go through with their drugs," he stated.

Muntaka said the interceptions were made possible through intelligence gathered by security agencies and informants.

He praised the leadership of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) for its approach to combating drug trafficking.

"It is very difficult, but they are risking it every day and every night to make sure that our country is not used as a transit point or destination for drugs," he said.

The Interior Minister assured the committee that the government would continue strengthening efforts to combat drug trafficking at the country's ports and across its inland borders to help combat the menace.
