In Ashanti culture, whenever the Asantehene or any traditional ruler speaks publicly, a distinct response is often heard from behind them.
And so has the popular expression, “Ziom” or “Wiom” become closely associated with the authority and presence of the Asantehene during public gatherings.
The men behind that unique response are the Asantehene’s linguists, known in Akan as ‘akyeame.’ They play an important role in the Ashanti Kingdom, serving as spokespersons and aides to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
During the Asantehene’s appearance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Friday, May 15, 2026, eight of these linguists accompanied him and were seen lined up according to seniority, from right to left.

Leading the group was the Chief Linguist, Akyeamehene Nsuase Poku III. Also present was Kyeame Jachie Amoateng, who doubles as the Chief of Bosomtwe Jachie, a role many describe as unique within the traditional setup.
Another prominent figure among the linguists was Kyeame Kentenkrekyi, who currently serves as the main spokesperson for the Asantehene.
Kyeame Bonsu and Kyeame Antwi Boasiako were also part of the delegation at the event.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is reported to have 12 ‘akyeame,’ although only eight were present with him during the UPSA programme last Friday.
