Following the arrest and detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, an old video has emerged of the Deputy Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu Bempah, predicting a by-election for the constituency.
In the said video, which is from an interview prior to the 2024 election, Owusu Bempah, even though he did not directly name Ohene Kwame Frimpong (OK Frimpong), said that there would be a by-election for the constituency if the independent candidate in the election won.
“If you vote for the independent candidate, there will be a by-election in the next year. Asante Akyem, the people of Agogo, don’t go and drink (sic). I’m telling you that if you vote for the independent candidate, in less than three weeks or a year, you’re going to have a by-election in Asante Akyem.
“We don’t want to go for a by-election. And I know what I’m talking about. Don’t gamble with this seat. If you want a by-election, vote for the independent candidate.”
He reiterated, “I know what I’m talking about. I’m saying that if you vote for the independent candidate, there will be a by-election in the next one year in Asante Akyem North.”
He told the journalist who was interviewing him that he should mark the date because his prediction would come to pass.
“You have seen that you’re surprised. Even if you're a journalist, you are shocked. I want you to mark today’s date. I’m not being a prophet, but let them make the mistake of voting for the independent candidate.”
It turns out that OK Frimpong was the only independent candidate in the parliamentary election for the Asante Akyem North constituency in 2024.
He won the election with 26,926 votes, representing about 70% of the votes cast, beating the NPP’s Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi — the then incumbent Member of Parliament — and the NDC’s Kofi Asamoah.
He contested as an independent candidate after losing the NPP parliamentary primaries to Appiah-Kubi.
About OK Frimpong’s arrest:
The Asante Akyem North legislator was arrested at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
Multiple reports have indicated that he was using Amsterdam as a transit point to London, United Kingdom, where he was going to visit his family.
He was arrested by Dutch security authorities due to an arrest warrant issued by the United States government.
The MP is reportedly being investigated for his alleged involvement in financial crimes, including money laundering and “romance scams” worth about US$32 million.
He has, however, denied the allegations.
