Arrest of OK Frimpong a 'diplomatic nightmare' - Amanda Clinton

Private legal practitioner Amanda Clinton has described the arrest of Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament Kwame Ohene Frimpong in the United States as a diplomatic headache for Ghana, suggesting that American intelligence policy may have deliberately kept Accra in the dark.

Speaking on The Key Points on TV3, Clinton explained that the nature of the MP's status as a politically exposed person made it unlikely that US authorities would have extended Ghana the courtesy of a prior warning.

"It is very difficult for US intelligence and security agencies to share information with our counterparts. So although we have a fantastic relationship with the US, and it has been a deepened relationship where there's been more extraditions, ultimately when it comes to politically exposed people — when it is Latin America and Africa in particular — it is difficult for them to give us the heads up," she said.

According to Clinton, the withholding of information was not necessarily a slight against Ghana but rather a calculated move to protect the integrity of the investigation — and to ensure the suspect boarded the flight.

"American policy is not to give that heads up in my estimation when you're dealing with a politically exposed person, and the information could potentially compromise that investigation," she explained.

Despite the friction the incident has caused, Clinton stopped short of blaming Washington outright, framing it instead as an uncomfortable but predictable consequence of how the US handles sensitive cross-border operations involving public officials.

"I do think that Ghana could have had a heads up — but it's a bit of a diplomatic nightmare," she concluded.
