Staff at the Oyarifa branch of Fidelity Bank Ghana in Accra were left surprised on Monday, April 27, 2026, when an unemployed graduate returned GH¢4,000 he found at the bank’s ATM.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, Emmanuel Appiah Boateng, who has been unemployed for nine months, went to withdraw money using his wife’s card to meet urgent family needs.

What was meant to be a routine transaction quickly turned into a moral test when he discovered GH¢4,000 left in the ATM tray.

“I immediately called the Fidelity helpline to report it, he recounted.

Earlier that day, Emmanuel had attempted to withdraw cash from a nearby ATM, only to find it out of service.

Frustrated and nearly heading home empty-handed, he decided to try another machine in Oyarifa, where he encountered what he described as an overwhelming temptation.

Despite his financial challenges, the father of four said he chose to act in line with his values.

Emmanuel, who holds a master’s degree in cybersecurity, a bachelor’s degree in information technology and a certification in project management, said he followed the bank’s instructions and safeguarded the money over the weekend.

On Monday, April 26, 2026, he returned to the bank and handed over the full amount to staff to help trace the rightful owner.

The branch manager, visibly impressed, praised his honesty and described the act as rare.

“Your decision comes at a time when many households are grappling with the rising cost of living, making your honesty even more striking,” the manager said.

An alumnus of Opoku Ware School, Emmanuel later shared the experience with members of his church, the Faith Life Family Assemblies of God at Oyarifa Gravel Pit.
