It was an emotional moment during Sunday’s service at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC), Trassaco Branch, when the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, broke down in tears while rendering an apology to the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye.

Debrah’s apology follows unsavory comments made by Dr Mary Awusi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, against the chairman, who had earlier raised concerns over the devastating effects of galamsey in the country.

In a video shared by GBC on Sunday, April 26, 2026, Julius Debrah was seen on stage before the congregation, alongside the Senior Pastor of Alabaster International Ministry, Prophet Kofi Oduro, as he addressed the gathering.

During his remarks, Debrah noted that he and other members of the government are staunch members of the Church of Pentecost and hold the church in high reverence.

Rendering his apology, Debrah described the comments made by Dr Mary Awusi as a ‘slip,’ stressing that it was not an attempt to malign the chairman or the church as a whole.

“But the chairman of our church, you know, myself, Hon Elder Ofosu Ampofo, our Local Government minister, and several others are members of your church. A few days ago, one of our colleagues, Dr Mary Awusi, slipped a bit against you, and I want, on this occasion commemorating my birthday, to let the whole church forgive us.

“It was just a slip. It wasn't intentionally done to malign our church. I believe sincerely that you will forgive her and forgive us and accept us as your children. God really bless all of you,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Awusi has since apologised for threatening to deal with the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye, over his recent public comments on illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey.

Speaking on Accra FM on Friday, April 24, 2026, Dr Awusi acknowledged that her comments may have offended the church leader, the church, and the general public.

“I retract and apologise. I have great respect for the man of God, considering his position as Chairman of the Church of Pentecost. In expressing myself, I may have offended him, the Church, and the general public, and for that, I sincerely apologise. I am human,” she stated.

Her apology followed earlier remarks in response to Apostle Nyamekye’s concerns about the environmental impact of illegal mining.

Dr Awusi had warned that if the church leader continued to “behave like a politician,” he would be treated as one.

“He’s a man of God, so we’ll forgive him. But next time, he shouldn’t stoop so low to that level. If he descends to that level to behave like a politician, we will deal with him as a politician,” she had stated.

Apostle Nyamekye raised concerns about galamsey during his State of the Church Address at the 48th General Conference of the Church of Pentecost, highlighting how polluted water bodies are affecting traditional baptism practices in some communities.
