President John Dramani Mahama has commented on the shooting incident involving United States President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on April 25, 2027.

Speaking at the 60th birthday thanksgiving service of Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, which was held at the Pentecost Church, Trasacco Branch, on Sunday, April 26, 2026, Mahama said the joint appearance of both the president and vice president at the event was itself an exception to standard protocol.

"One of the major things they tell us when you reach the high office of president and vice president is not to drive in the same car together. They won't allow you to do it. Myself and Naana cannot fly in the same plane together.

"And as much as possible, they avoid us being at the same events together — unless it's a very important event that is unavoidable," he said.

He then pointed to the incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington DC, where a gunman identified as Cole Thomas Allen, 31, stormed the event and opened fire, forcing the Secret Service to evacuate President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance from the venue.

"This morning I was watching TV and there were some gunshots at the White House press call dinner. And it's a ceremony traditionally the president and vice president attend.

"And when the gunshots rang out, you should have seen the Secret Service people bundling the president and the vice president out," he said.

President John Dramani Mahama then added that the incident had not been lost on his own security detail.

"I'm sure today our security are taking extra precaution because two of us are here," he added.

Meanwhile, the shooter has been apprehended and is in police custody.

No fatalities were recorded at the US event.
