I disagree, Hon. former CJ. The Supreme Court should not be handling all manner of cases, some of which can be handled by lower courts. We have Circuit Courts, Hight Courts, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court. Under normal circumstances, the Supreme Court should be a final arbiter, unlike the current dispensation where all manner of cases are sent straight to the Supreme Court. The number of Justices of the Supreme Court should be reduced to 9 or 11. It does not make sense for a country of 32 million or so people to have in the excess of 18 SJs.

Why don't you campaign to limit the type of cases that go to the Ghana Supreme Court? Go ahead and do it. Work with Ghanaians, opinion leaders, GBA, Parliamentarians, etc to do that. SC justices employ brilliant, qualified law clerks and judicial assistants who actually DO THE WORK.... increase their numbers and pay them well. SC cases normally don't get adjudicated quickly unless it is top priority case of immense importance. Cases could take years to resolve, and it is not justice denied. The example you gave that other jurisdictions have limited supreme court cases, is true - but campaign to change Ghana's situation to follow suit - you are in a position of influence, right? Take care.

Mind you these people go on pension on their salary. Another drain on the economy. Madam you're now in a good position to effect changes through the constitution review committee. Not supporting the sacked CJ to redeem your image.

No, this is not possible. Cases should mostly end at appeal courts. Supreme court should summarily dismiss cases which cannot prove an error in law or procedure at the appeal court level.

The US has 10 times Ghana's population but has only 9 Supreme court justices. It is not all cases that the SC should hear. The US Supreme Court does not take all cases. Most cases end at State Courts or Federal District and Courts of Appeal. We have many High Court and Appeal Court Judges they should have be able to deal with these cases. The Appeal Court should be decentralized just as the US does. Most of our appeal court judges' are in Accra. I have always been advocating the cap on the Supreme Court. the lack of ceiling is costly and allows the politicization of the curt.

USA with 50 states + 2 territories ( Hawaii and DC) has 9 SCJ. These 9 are effective. USA is a more litigation plugged country than Ghana. Screen cases to determine if they meet the bar to even be heard.
