Council of State member Sophia Akuffo has weighed in on discussions regarding the limit on the number of judges appointed to the Apex Court.
According to her, placing a cap on the number of Supreme Court judges could pose serious challenges to the court’s ability to deliver its work.

She indicated that due to the magnitude of the workload, Supreme Court judges are often overworked, as there is no limit to the number of legal cases handled by the court.
In an interview with Channel One TV on November 6, 2025, Akuffo said, “I always make a long argument when I'm asked that question because before you can begin to talk about a limit on the number of Supreme Court justices, you need to also then look at the scope and magnitude of the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.
“So long as you have a Supreme Court to which everybody has a right of access, if they keep appealing along the hierarchy, how can you limit the number of the judges? They are overworked because there is no limit, even in terms of value of the case, there's no limit as to subject matter, there's no limit.”
The former Chief Justice, in buttressing her point, referenced countries with a cap on their justices, saying that in those cases, the limit exists because there is also a restriction on the types of cases that can be brought before the court.

“You will notice if you were to do some quick research that in every jurisdiction where there is a certain limit to the number of justices, it's because the sort of cases that can come to the Supreme Court is also limited,” she added.
