Let me help you here. I think you need it. When the cocoa price reaches $11,000 per tonne in the future and the exchange rate remains at 1 to 10.25, the farmers will make 7,000 cedis per bag. You cannot be talking about a certain 7,000 cedis when other factors like exchange rate keeps varying. If the farmers are literates as you claim, they will understand this. They will also understand that, with the current adjustment in formula, they are likely to get 7,000 cedis faster than the previous formula if cocoa prices go up to that height (the currency strength also plays a role). Also note, that nobody made a promise to any farmer as you claim. It was the current finance minister in his own capacity who thought cocoa prices could rise to 7,000 cedis at a point in time while in opposition. The conditions are not the same now as it was when he made the comment. The dollar is now 1 to 10.25 (per the rate used) compared to 1 to 16.4 last year when he made the comment. He clarified this at his vetting.

Govt still paid farmers GHS 3100 ie with cushion of GHS 1114. An increment in price from USD3100 to USD5040 per ton means an increment from GHS 1985.9 to GHS 3228.75 per bag. That is 62.6% increment.

The farmgate increase is only a paltry 128ghc!!! From 3100ghc to only 3228ghc. What will an increase like that do?? Cocoa smuggling to Ivory Coast will go on unabated. They couldn't even match the price in Ivory Coast!!! Expectations were so high with farmers thinking it will be around 4000ghc or more. What a big disappointment!!! Farmers don't need any FOB price. They don't get paid for cocoa in dollars at that FOB price. They've been scammed!!!
