The government has announced a significant increase in the producer price of cocoa, raising it from US$3,100 per tonne to US$5,040 per tonne for the upcoming 2025/2026 cocoa season, which officially opens on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
The new price represents a 62.58% increase in US dollar terms and aligns with President John Mahama’s commitment to ensure cocoa farmers receive at least 70% of the gross Free-On-Board (FOB) value, which stands at US$7,200 per tonne.
Announcing the decision via X on Monday August 4, 2025, the Chairman of the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC) and Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, said the price hike was arrived at following deliberations by the PPRC and careful consideration of prevailing global market trends and domestic economic conditions.
“Government has by this decision increased the producer price significantly by 62.58% in US dollar terms. This also translates to 70% of the gross FOB value and is a fulfillment of President Mahama’s promise to cocoa farmers,” he stated.
For comparison, Dr Forson highlighted that during the 2024/2025 cocoa season, the previous administration under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) set the FOB at US$4,850 per tonne and the producer price at US$3,100, representing 63.9% of the FOB, despite more favourable world market prices at the time.
He mentioned that the current gross FOB value was derived using outstanding cocoa contracts, approximately 100,000 tonnes sold at US$2,600 per tonne during the 2023/2024 crop season, and an average forecast for the 2025/2026 season.
Dr Forson further explained that at an average exchange rate of GH¢10.25 to the US dollar, the new producer price moves from GH¢49,600 per tonne to GH¢51,660 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢3,228.75 per 64-kilogram bag of cocoa beans.
The new producer price, which will take effect from Thursday, August 7, 2025, is expected to offer better returns to farmers and help stabilise rural economies in cocoa-growing regions across the country.
