Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has expressed disappointment and lack of confidence in President John Dramani Mahama's commitment to the fight against illegal mining after his recent stakeholder engagement with Civil Society Organisations at the Jubilee House.
In a discussion on Newfile, shared via X on October 5, 2025, Kofi Bentil noted that the president does not have a clear roadmap for solving illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
He emphasised that President Mahama and his administration are full of talk, adding that the country has not witnessed any progress in the fight against galamsey after the numerous stakeholder engagements.
Galamsey: President Mahama reveals when he will declare a state of emergency
"We have talked and talked. I have said all kinds of things, some taken, some not taken well. Activity is not the same as progress. We are seeing a lot of activity, a lot of stimulation, a lot of talk, no progress. Galamsey is getting worse, so we don't need more talk.
"Don't look at what people are saying. Look at the ground, and then you will know what is going on. Let me give you an example. Despite all the mountains of talk when this government came in, nothing or not much has been done in terms of stopping galamsey," he said.
Kofi Bentil further emphasised that President John Dramani Mahama and his appointees will not fight illegal mining because they have no interest in solving the canker.
According to him, the nation will not win the fight against galamsey.
Galamsey Fight: 'We won't leave poisoned rivers for our children' - President Mahama
"I have come to the conclusion that we will not win the galamsey fight. There is no sincerity in doing that. And look, the experts will tell us that all of us are going to pay a very heavy price for some people's private profit. It's not you and me who have to solve galamsey.
"It is the president, his cabinet, his ministers, and the people we have given authority to go and solve it. To me, they don't have any interest in solving it because they think not solving it has better benefits for them politically... Don't watch the talk. Watch the action," he added.
