The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has escaped two separate assassination attempts, a senior official at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has disclosed.
He made this disclosure while underscoring the heightened dangers associated with the agency’s anti-corruption mandate.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Sammy Darko, the OSP’s Director of Research, Communications and Strategy, revealed that personnel of the office frequently face life-threatening situations in the course of their work.
'Not my dream office’ — Kpebu rejects speculation of special prosecutor ambition
“The Special Prosecutor has survived two assassination attempts. Myself, I have been dragged out of my official vehicle and beaten by 17 policemen,” Sammy Darko said, while stressing that the risks confronting the office are far more serious than the public may realise.
He explained that the OSP’s investigations often involve powerful individuals with significant influence, making the work inherently dangerous.
“People need to understand the gravity of what we are doing. This is not an office that works behind a desk; we face real threats every day in the course of our duties,” he added.
Responding to public criticism regarding the pace and outcomes of the OSP’s investigations, he insisted that many of the cases the office handles are complex and sensitive, requiring extreme caution.

“Some citizens are quick to judge, claiming that we haven’t delivered. They don’t realise that in criminal investigations, especially those involving influential actors, there are threats and dangers that are not visible to the public,” he noted.
His comments come amid renewed public debate over the effectiveness and independence of the OSP. Journalists, civil society groups, and legal analysts have, in recent months, scrutinised the office’s handling of high-profile cases.
The issue also surfaced in Parliament on Thursday, where some lawmakers argued that the OSP should be abolished, claiming that despite substantial budget allocations over the years, the office has not demonstrated sufficient impact.
