The Acting Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Julius Kpekpena, has accused some Members of Parliament (MPs), District Chief Executives (DCEs), and Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) of facilitating the installation of illegal electricity meters in their constituencies.
Speaking at a meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Energy on Friday, September 26, 2025, he touched on the financial impact of these illegal connections.
ECG cancels over 200 questionable contracts
“Some of the meters we encounter in our network that have not come through us, they don’t record anything; they are not proper meters. So, when you put them there, they exist but ECG cannot read the meters. The meters are not measuring, so we cannot read the consumption, and we cannot bill it.
“So, we face two problems. First, we don’t have you in our records, so we cannot bill you. The second problem is that we cannot even track the power you are using. Unfortunately, many of the facilitators are friends in Parliament, assemblymen, and DCEs. We need your cooperation to curb the proliferation of illegal meters," he noted.
He also commented on the company’s recent cancellation of contracts as part of its wider reform program.
ECG records highest-ever monthly revenue
“We have terminated over 200 contracts that were deemed non-performing or unnecessary,” he added.
