KATH doctors declare indefinite strike over CEO's suspension

Doctors at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital have gone on strike over CEO's suspension

Following the suspension of the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, by the Minister of Health, doctors at the facility have announced an indefinite strike action.

The decision was taken by members of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) at an emergency meeting held on June 5, 2026.

In a notice addressed to the Chairman of the KATH Board and sighted by GhanaWeb, the association said it had reviewed recent developments at the hospital and expressed concern over actions taken against the CEO.

Health Minister suspends KATH CEO for two weeks

According to KADA and its Chairman, Dr Michael Leat, the suspended CEO's decision to temporarily halt new emergency admissions and coordinate with nearby health facilities was aimed at addressing severe congestion at the hospital's Emergency Department and ensuring patient safety.

The association argued that the measures were necessary due to capacity challenges facing the hospital.

"Members expressed profound concern that actions undertaken by management aimed at addressing serious patient care challenges and ensuring patient and caregiver safety have rather resulted in disciplinary sanctions against the Chief Executive Officer," portions of the statement read.

The doctors further stated that KATH continues to operate under significant infrastructure constraints despite rising patient numbers.

"The current situation reflects longstanding systemic challenges that require urgent policy and infrastructure solutions rather than punitive action against healthcare leaders attempting to manage their consequences," it read.

KADA also condemned the suspension of the CEO, describing the decision as unjustified.

"The meeting also unanimously condemned the Minister's action in suspending the Chief Executive Officer under the prevailing circumstances, describing the decision as unjustified and counterproductive to efforts to address the underlying systemic challenges confronting the Hospital," the group indicated.

The association announced that all medical doctors at KATH would withdraw their services from 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

"To commence a total withdrawal of services by medical doctors of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital effective 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026," the statement announced.

According to the doctors, the strike will continue until the suspension of the CEO is reviewed and reversed.

They are also demanding that the KATH Board issue clear policies on managing situations where the hospital exceeds its emergency capacity, including guidelines on patient overflow and restrictions on admissions when necessary.

Additionally, the doctors want the Ministry of Health to provide timelines for the operationalisation of Sewua Hospital and Afari Military Hospital, as well as timelines for the retooling of KATH and other hospitals in the Ashanti Region.

"The Ministry of Health provides clear timelines for the operationalisation of Sewua Hospital and Afari Military Hospital, as well as timelines for the retooling of KATH and the other hospitals within the Ashanti Region, to ease the burden," the group demanded.

KADA stressed that the industrial action is intended to draw attention to challenges affecting healthcare delivery and not to undermine patient care.

"Members wish to emphasise that this action is not intended to undermine healthcare delivery but rather to draw urgent national attention to issues of patient and caregiver safety, clinical governance, professional accountability, and the sustainability of healthcare services at Ghana's second-largest teaching hospital," they concluded.
