The Kumasi Traditional Council has banned all funerals throughout the Ashanti kingdom until the burial of the late Asantehema, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

The decision was taken after an emergency meeting on Thursday by the council after the official announcement by Manhyia Palace of the death of the mother of the Asantehene.

A ban has also been placed on drumming and noisemaking throughout the Asanteman Kingdom.

Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II died last Monday night at the age of 111, after reigning for 39 years.

She was said to have died peacefully in her sleep.

An official statement by the Manhyia Palace announced that the traditional one week rites will be performed at Manhyia on Thursday, 24, November 2016.

The late Asantehemaa was the 13th Queen mother of the Asante Kingdom and the mother of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

She saw the reign of the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, as Asantehene who reigned from 1970 to 1999.
