Fix the 'galamsey' mess and stop dragging NPP into it – Miracles Aboagye to government

An aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has called on the government to stop drawing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into discussions on illegal mining and instead concentrate on tackling the menace.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Aboagye alleged that elements within the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) were deeply involved in illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as “galamsey”.

“The NDC is heavily involved in ‘galamsey’. When we went round the Akwatia and the Ayensuano area, they were heavily involved,” he claimed.

He described disturbing scenes of mining activities along major water bodies, including the Offin and Pra rivers.

According to him, miners have diverted the course of the Offin River and continue to operate openly despite the presence of police checkpoints.

He further alleged that illegal operators were using as many as five changfans directly on the Pra River.

“With the Offin River, the ‘galamseyers’ have diverted the path of the river, and they are mining in it. They use the fresh water from the river to wash the gold, and the dirty water flows to the right path. When you stand by the road, you will see them. Just beside them is a police checkpoint. These miners are there mining with impunity and without fear,” he indicated.

Aboagye stressed that the situation has become alarming, noting that drone footage captured the scale of operations.

He urged government officials to stop politicising the issue by bringing the NPP into the conversation.

“Wonder Madilo and his people should stop talking about NPP. For now, the NPP doesn’t matter. We are out of office. You are in power; the mandate has been given to you. Fix the thing,” he said.
