2024 presidential candidate Kofi Akpaloo, the founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), downplayed his recent arrest and detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office after his release.

But it appears he is in more trouble than he has let on, as details of the reasons for his arrest by EOCO emerge.

The General Secretary of the Liberty Party of Ghana (LPG), Jerry Owusu Appauh, in an interview with Onua FM, gave details of the offences the former presidential candidate is allegedly accused of.

Kofi Akpaloo arrested by EOCO - Report

He pointed out that the LPG founder was being investigated for alleged corruption-related offences and money laundering in a government contract he was given for the construction of a cocoa road.

Owusu Appauh pointed out that Kofi Akpaloo's ordeal stemmed from using his friend's documents for the COCOBOD road contract.

He said that even though Akpaloo was the only one executing the contract, his friend was allegedly taking part of the money.

"The whole issue is that he and his friend did some work for COCOBOD. He used documents of his friend for a COCOBOD contract, and his friend took half of the money anytime payment was made, leaving the work the money was meant for unattended. This resulted in a fight between the two men.

"So, anytime he executes work for the contract, his friend refuses to help him cash the cheque he is given, saying that the money was his. His friend went behind him to even cash a cheque of GH¢1 million, even though he (Akpaloo) had gone to borrow money to buy items to execute the contract," he said.

He added, "The government has paid him GH¢3.1 million, out of which his friend has taken GH¢1.3 million for doing nothing."

The general secretary stated that the founder of his party had even taken legal action against the friend at the High Court.

He also alleged that EOCO became interested in the matter because Kofi Akpaloo used his friend's documents to secure the COCOBOD contract, leading the office to accuse him of forgery.

He added that the money laundering allegation stemmed from the founder of the LPG depositing funds received from the government into a different bank account from the one he had presented during the contract award–an account belonging to his friend.
