Akufo-Addo denies reports of seeking safe passage for Ken Ofori-Atta

Akufo-Addo has denied reports of wanting a safe passage for Ofori-Atta

The Office of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed as false reports suggestions that he is considering approaching President John Dramani Mahama to seek assurances of safe passage for former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

In a rejoinder on the matter, dated December 16, 2025, the former president's office said its attention had been drawn to a publication by The Herald newspaper, which was subsequently carried by other media outlets, making claims about Akufo-Addo’s alleged intentions.

Troubled Akufo-Addo seeks President Mahama's audience for Ken Ofori-Atta's return

“The attention of the Office of the Former President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been brought to a publication by the Herald Newspaper, which has been subsequently reported by other media outlets on the above subject matter.

“The publication claimed that the former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is considering approaching President John Dramani Mahama to seek assurances of the safe passage for Ofori-Atta,” portions of the statement read.

According to the office, the publication is “utterly false” and a “total fabrication,” stressing that Akufo-Addo has neither contemplated nor made, whether expressly or impliedly, any request or representation to President Mahama, his agents, or assigns regarding the safety of Ofori-Atta.

“The Office wishes to state emphatically that this publication is utterly false. It is a total fabrication by the supposed source. The Office further states that Nana Akufo-Addo has neither contemplated such a consideration nor expressly or impliedly made any such request or representation to President John Dramani Mahama, his agent(s) or assign(s),” it noted.

The statement reaffirmed the former president’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law, noting that his fidelity to due process has never been in doubt.

While the statement acknowledged that the fate of Ofori-Atta is a concern for the former president, the office explained that this concern stems from both familial ties and Ofori-Atta’s role as finance minister throughout Nana Akufo-Addo’s two terms in office.

However, it emphasised that such concern does not extend to any attempt to interfere with the rule of law.

Trial of Ken Ofori-Atta and seven others opens in Accra

“As a firm believer in democratic tenets, Nana Akufo-Addo's fidelity to the Rule of Law has never been in question. It is true that the fate of Ofori Atta is of considerable concern to the Former President because after all apart from Mr Ofori Atta being his cousin, more importantly, he was the Minister for Finance in both the governments of his mandate. But that concern does not extend to wanting to interfere with the rule of law. Hopefully this sets the records straight on this matter,” it added.
