This is one way to deter players from behaving this way.

The guy, Suarez, was busy playing and defending his country—as our players were doing—and why can’t you even be thankful to him for FOOLISHLY hitting the ball with his hand—which is a foul in soccer?
How could we say that if Suarez didn't hit the ball with his hand, that could have been a goal? How the hell can you prove a negative? The point is cerebrally (commonsensically) simple: "Gyan failed to score a God given penalty" and so just let us lick our wounds and hope for better outcomes in Brazil.
I had a similar personal penalty tragedy during my higher education school days in Ghana, where I wept bitterly on the field after missing a penalty kick—to qualify my school for the final/trophy game. It happens is sports. Gyan is very good at taking penalty kicks, but my golly; he cannot SCORE ALL THE TIME regardless of his experience and talent and Ghanaians SHOULD GET OVER WITH THAT. “LUCK certainly counts.”

And a serious caution: Our first game with the United States on June 16th should be taken very serious. The Americans are good at other sports like Basketball, American football, Baseball and RAW Athletics—as we see at the Olympic Games. I think Suarez did what every "smart" player would do in such a situation-prevent a likely goal scoring opportunity, take a red card and pray that the opponent misses the penalty.
Defenders (and some players) take that gamble to avoid conceding a goal. Sometimes, goalkeepers intentionally send down (opponent) players in the penalty box, just because such goalkeepers want to take a gamble-that the referee might ignore the glaring penalty or that the "opposing" player will miss the penalty. What Suarez did was not different-just prevent the ball from entering the net and face the consequences.
When the defenders and the goalkeepers take such forms of gamble and they are "caught" by the referee, then, it is up to the opposing team to make use of the opportunity. Our own players have done similar things in different ways. For example, John Mensah was sent off in our match against Nigeria (the last time we hosted AFCON). It was up to Nigeria to take advantage of our smaller number (fortunately for us, Nigeria couldn't).
If we (or Asamamoah Gyan) had converted the penalty, nobody would be talking about Suarez today. Let's assume that it was the other way round-that is one of our players parried a goal bound ball and in the end we qualified for the semi finals, would we expect Uruguay to hate that player? We had our chance and we blew it! Hating Suarez means we have to hate any player that commits any form of foul against us.
Once again, let us use our chances when we get them.

However, my problem with you was what apparently was your motive in your decision to take that penalty kick: pure selfishness. You were consumed with the strong passion to win the Golden Boot Award, so you elected yourself to take that fateful kick. You didn't wait for your coach to select you; you forced yourself to do so and insisted on doing so. You even seemed to have argued with your captain, Appiah, about who should take the kick. That's where lay the problem: IT WAS YOUR SELFISHNESS that drove your decision. You didn't think about the possibility of missing your target. You even nearly missed the second kick, sending the ball way up into the upper right corner. And yet you think of yourself as being the expert penalty taker in the entire Black Stars team.
I hope you've really learnt a good lesson from that experience. This is because the truth is your failed action has brought untold pain not to you only but to many a Ghanaian's and African's heart. I personally have continued to feel pain any time I remember what you did and how we were so close to the ultimate but your selfish action denied us that opportunity.
