The soccer legend has every reason to complain and lament about the way this country understands 'patriotism.' D K Poison's sad story readily comes to mind here, where he lent his personal money to the nation at the instance of the then head of state, I K Acheampong and got nothing in return but sorrow and pain. It is time we rethink "patriotism" or a time will come when there would be nobody to "die" for this country.

Complain about what? What does he want, money? He did not state how the country has rejected him. He want employment as a Coach or what? I don't get what he is complaining about. These Players used their money and fame to chase many women and now that they can't find any source of money because they are not employable, they are blaming Ghana. It is not only footballers who have sacrificed for the country. Every worker has sacrificed for the country.
These People even had the chance to travel to many countries if not football would not have dreamt of and they are now blaming the country? Why is Hearts refusing to even employ Polo, their best Player ever? There is something wrong with this guy.
Cocoa farmers, Miners, Teachers, Nurses, Doctors and others all have contributed to the country but are not asking for handouts. Mr Polo, go and find you a job.

I've only seen the outside of it and have no clue what the inside looks like but one person building a mosque in those days suggests he had good enough money. After retiring from soccer as a player, he's joined the coaching bandwagon so I don't understand Polo at all? He cries everywhere and at his age who should pamper him me or you? Lol

What a bunch of contradictions? Didn't you state that Polo and other former players alike are not EMPLOYABLE? How do you reconcile that with your last statement that Polo, who doesn't have employable skills should go and find a job? As what...a watchman, truck pusher or driver?
When an issue comes up you have to take a holistic approach at finding lasting solutions than going off tangent and saying things that doesn't help anyone. How about the GFA coordinating with the Ghana Education Service in promoting interschools soccer at the SSS level and beyond and ensuring that a system is in place to have soccer players who have employable skills so they'll not be a burden on the government/economy in the future? In the meantime for those like Polo who cannot go back to formal education why not set up programs to teach them skills that can help them pursue decent trades instead of occasionally giving them TV sets which means absolutely nothing to a hungry soul? That's my 2 pesewas on this matter!!!

Sheriff I don't think you got the import of what I stated or you just didn't pay attention. What I'm saying is that the 'band aid - called bandage in Ghana' approach to issues is not helping us. It is not the duty of the government to take care of them but I believe if people have sacrificed to bring fame and laurels to the nation then they deserve some help in their times of need. Freebies isn't the way to go but if the GFA can help establish a program that will train these people to become useful citizens then all the better. For those playing now how do we ensure they don't become a burden on the people? By putting in place mechanisms that will enable them acquire other educational/employable skills now that they can fall on when age passes them by. Maybe if you've seen the fate of old players like Armah Senegal, Joe Tex (Bismark Odoi), Yahya Kassum and co. you'll see reason with my suggestion.

Mohammed Ahmed alias Polo, travelled to the Emirates at certain time of his career and played for a number of clubs, and might have made some money. But from the way he is speaking, the money is all gone! He doesn't command the same astuteness in the world of business. I believe He could not establish himself so as to be comfortable in life. Unless the football fraternity do something about his situation, he is going down with misery. His other problem is that driven by anger and frustration, he is talking too much of late. The power blocks in football don't like this, and the earlier he stops this for someone to sympathise with hi, the better.

in the last group game in buake 1984 ghana beat mali 1:0 courtesy a goal by john bannerman.
owusu mensah, joe odoi, hesse odamtten, seth ampadu capatain isaac paha, papa ako, bannerman, albert asase, francis kumi, abdul razak & kofi abbrey. polo ben kayede, came in later. if you joined blackstars in 1972, then accept the fact that by 1984, you were all going down the hill. a considerable number of the 1978 cup winning players were included in the 1984 squad when most of them did not make the 1980 and 1982 team. Most of you at the time especially your good self and abdul razak had put on considerable weight and you were all looking to handsome and too smooth to match the skills of the new kids on the block such as raba madjier, belloume, fergani, abega, bell, nkono, ernest ebongue, rodger miila, stephen keshi, humphrey odorgbo, abu zeid, el khatib, abdel khani, yousef fofana etc.
lately you can hear coach afranie who was the goalkeppers trainer in libya in 1982, making all kinds of comments in the media to suggest that he was largely the brain behind ghana's success in libya. He keeps telling us that bannerman played in libya when in actual fact players like bannerman, carr, baker, hesse, kwesi appiah, seth ampadu, kyenkyenhene, papa ako, ben kayede did not kick a ball in the tournament.
if coach afranie today captalising on the fact that osam duodu is certainly not a media happy man is creating the impresssion he was in charge of the blackstars in 1982, then it goes to buttress the point that prior to the 1984 tournament he undermined the head coach osam duodu, which somehow polo to polo has giving indications to in this article. coach afranie is even all over the place telling us that he was in charge of the starlets in 1991, when we all saw on tv as kids at the time that it was otto phister. in fact no ghanaian coach would have used odartey as a striker and asare as a central defender as otto phister did in italy at the time. that created room for the very effective kofi mbeah and dan addo.
