The Christian teaching against masturbation was wrongly based on the story of Onan who, when he had sex with the brother's wife, Tamar, practiced coitus interruptus by withdrawing and ejaculating on the floor in order to prevent her getting pregnant. This was said to displease Yahweh and he killed him (Genesis 38:9-10). That gave rise to masturbation being seen as a sin against God. Bible scholars are generally agreed that this is wrong, considering why God was displeased with Onan. You can all read about this by googling onani or onanism. Scandinavians use "onani" to represent masturbation. To ejaculate "onarere".
Below is something brief which summarises what I wrote. Copied it from the Internet. I read a longer discussion of the topic way back in the 90s from the American Humanist Digest. Just spreading a bit of knowledge.
"The word onanism is not based on the biblical story of Onan itself but on an interpretation of that biblical story, nor is the word onanism found in any form in the biblical texts. Thus the etymological connection of onanism (in the sense of masturbation) with Onan's name is misleading."
