SHATTA WALE, A BRAND THAT MANY DON'T UNDERSTAND.
I have heard many music pundit and marketers predict doomsday for Shatta Wale. But I can assure them the Shatta brand is still rising very fast and it is not peaking any time soon, let alone declining. One can understand this market phenomenon upon a very candid scrutiny of his brand and how he strategically establish his market (fan base).
The shatta brand represents a real life story in the streets, that he had captured very well in his music repertoire. In that story, Shatta Wale emerges as a hero, who has risen from grass to grace from the ghettos. He has overcome every hurdle in his way; be it personal or industry related to establish his career. It is exactly this brand that Shatta Wale started building at the music market place from 2009 at the blind side of Ghanaian media and most music pundit.
Traditionally, most music brands in Ghana had been built and established using main stream media(TV, radio and journals) as a marketing channel. Shatta wale in his marketing and branding deviated from this industrial status quo, because he saw that it does not make economic sense , which I agree with him. The cost of using the usual marketing and branding methods in the music industry is very high considering expenditure on payola, publicity, admistration etc .This couple with bad regulation and organisation of the industry does not guarantee adequate revenue for artist. For me, it is an industry failure for a huge brand like Shatta Wale to receive royalties of 600.20 Ghana cedis in 2015. This is the case of a music industry that has established many successful brands, but has woefully failed to sustian the economic welfare of it's artist in the long run.
From somewhere 2009, Shatta started plying his music trade on the streets of Gh after an initial career failure some years back. There, he created a music marketing network by making friends from one ghetto to the other and organising underground performances . Each of these friends became a self replicating marketing channel that understood and pushed the Shatta brand, because he proved some musical dexterity that made all who met him fall in love with his music. At the same time, this market network of friends and family also served as a distribution channel for his songs. Again, he reinforced and integrated his marketing network with social media (largely face book) . This has made Shatta Wale an invisible marketing house that is largely independent of Gh media and the music industry. What we must now understand is that the Shatta brand is a true life storey, that has been established by an invisible marketing house from scratch. This is why Shatta Wale always gets away with his rants and outburst in the media, because his market and distribution channels understands his brand.
This Strategy of Shatta has enormously reduce cost that otherwise would have plummeted profit. He has been able to apply cost benefit analysis very well which should be the basis of every business decision. His market share (fan base) keep expanding world wide than any artist in GH, whilst he has kept expenditure on branding and promotion very low. His strategy of producing many songs from different genres is also to expand and meet the needs of different market segment and sustain his brand.
Most industry players were not preview to this music market phenomenon that took place between 2009 and 2012 in stealth, due to their over reliance on radio and TV for their research. For example as at 2011 Shatta had several dancehall tracks like 'A Ghana Mi Say' and 'Shatta City' that were very popular, but had no radio and TV play. As at 2012 shatta had built the largest die hard fan base in the history of the music industry. This was the background that propelled him to a higher glory after his crack down with the VGMA 2013. He had done his home work already from 2009 to 2013 so the VGMA issue was just petrol being pure in an already burning flame.
Shatta Wale, is likely to blow the world with this same strategy. When you look at the attendance of his international performances such as the one at the 02 arena in UK; It tell it all, that Shatta Wale is Ghana's number one artist world wide. I strongly believe awards and videos on MTV base should not be Shatta's focus because his strategy is working. At the right threshold these things will naturally fall inline.
