First off, these are not malams they're spiritualists/shamans/witches or witch doctors. Malams are Islamic religious leaders. Be careful of how you label things because it's incorrect and it can mislead.

I was born in Ghana in the late fifties and as long as I know, those spiritualists/shamans/witches or witch doctors call themselves 'Mallams' You will even see the word 'Mallam' on their sign borads/ billboards.

So for a person who is not a muslim and does not know the meaning of Mallam, the word will mean what those charlattans do.

I believe it is the duty of the muslim community to stop those witch doctors from using the term 'Mallam' as it tarnishes the name of the real Mallams, the islamic religious teachers.
