Kwaku Manu, your reason is the most intelligent suggestions since the abolition of the slave trade and colonial rule
You are a WISDOM and not a mere colonial titles of a "lawyer, doctor, professor, president, pastor, magistrates or whatever. A real pan Africanist. You have said it all. RESPECT !!!

Afterall countries like Finland ,Sweden, Scotland and many more have the english as their second language.. Ghana is not underdeveloped because of languages but because of politics. Our constitution was made to give stupid powers to idiots who misuse our funds without penalties. The language has its faults but never a reason for our underdevelopment. It has been and still our politics that cruches our developments.

SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW THE MANY INTERNATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED PROFESSIONALS WE HAVE HAD IN THIS COUNTRY - LEGAL LUMINARIES, SCHOLARS, DOCTORS, JOURNALISTS, HISTORIANS,DIPLOMATS, ETC - MADE IT. HOW MANY WELL-PLACED AND ORDINARY GHANAIANS DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH WITH THEIR CHILDREN AT HOME TODAY? HOW DO WE DEVELOP WHEN OUR CHILDREN WATCH AKAN DRAMA OR TELENOVELAS INSTEAD OF READING THEIR BOOKS WRITTEN IN ENGLISH? HOW MANY OF US DO NOT HAVE OUR HEADS BURIED IN OUR PHONES 18 OUT OF THE 24-HOURS-A-DAY WE HAVE AT OUR DISPOSAL? HOW MANY WOULD NOT DO WHAT I MAY CALL CALL MENIAL JOBS, IF THEY MUST, JUST TO RAISE MONEY TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES? GHANAIANS OF TODAY ARE PLAINLY INTELLECTUALLY LAZY AND YOU DO NOT DEVELOP WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE THE QUESTIONING OR ANALYTICAL MIND TO HELP YOU CHANGE YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS IS THE DIGITAL AGE AND YOU DO NOT FIND THE RELEVANT KICKER - KNOWLEDGE - DOCUMENTED IN GA, TWI, EVE OR DAGARTI: IT IS IN ENGLISH, OR FRENCH! WE LIVE IN A GLOBAL VILLAGE AND THE WORLD OUTSIDE IS NOT WAITING FOR US. WE HAVE DECEIVED OURSELVES FOR FAR TOO LONG. IT IS HIGH TIME WE WOKE UP TO REALITY.

Minuah Kwaku Manu ur assertion is a mere hypothesis that requires testing to become a theory, right now your conjecture ' Ghana is underdeveloped because of English language' sounds interesting, but has not gone through the rigor of testing to reach the threshold of theory.
For start, let's look at some underdeveloped nations that have recently become developed - talking about India & China. India's lingua franca is English, in a subcontinent of many languages.
While the standard Chinese language spoken by most Chinese is Mandarin.
Mr. Manu, Ghana's underdevelopment cannot be attributed to the inability many Ghanaians to speak and understand the English language.
Many countries in Africa are graduallly making progress to get out of the shackles of underdevelopment despite speaking many languages. Bostwana, for example, speaks many tongues but they've shot past middle income status.
We must adhere to inclusive policies for all Ghanaians to creep out of underdevelopment by polishing up our English, but allow Akan to percolate in our national fabric. Minuah Manu you can't force Akan on Ghanafyo.

Black American here, since 1975, I Kwaku have known that my paternal people are the from the Bretuo Clan within the Akans and my family last name is Manu, out of Kumasi.
My maternal-side is from the Anlos and the Bate' Clan.
At retirement, when I reach age 70, I will retire from the US to Ghana...if terrorists don't own the country by then?
Ghana's underdevelopment is also because of negative tribalism not the positive version. Ghana, too, focuses on organized religions such as Christianity and Islam instead of one's Ancestral Traditions and Spirituality. So Ghana and other African countries do not know what route to take to find their lost people in the Western diaspora and build a TRUE bridge of unity to uplift the whole of Africa.
I am an example. via Ancestral Spirituality, of the inferiority of organized religions.
Ghana is under-developed because her children can't get past seeing Blacks in the West for centuries now as "akata" in your mindset. African Culture is about reincarnation not living once then dying and going into an all-white Heaven further controlled by white, color-less people.
Because of my mindset, spiritual-side and wisdom from many lives I can offer a simple biz blueprint that would uplift Ghana's economy quickly in less than 10 years. If, a big IF Ghanaians could understand the power of the internet and global network with people like yourselves.
No need for 419 scamming, there are enough REAL opportunities online in various countries today that if done via networking, just blacks with blacks, can easily have the average adult Ghanaian at an income average yearly of $100,000...no problem.
Inward-thinking, corruption, foreign organized religions and distrust are Ghana's biggest flaws.
Kwaku Manu, I remember meeting an Afr Amer woman in the US, during 1975. She was dark and lovely with a large afro hairstyle that always sat perfect on her head like a crown. I later came to know that in her last life she was a Queen Mother within the Frafra people, whom helped other ethnic groups coming to Ghana-area from the East (Togo, Benin, Nigeria) settle in Ghana. Ethnic groups there in Ghana right now. This woman I speak of chose to be reborn in the US, to attempt to retrieve her children that had been enslaved and taken out of Ghana back in that past period. Ironically, Ghanaians today would call her "akata" due to one's own self-ignorance of one's culture, history and spirituality.
Many, many West Africans today have relatives within the Black American makeup, reincarnated, whom we can't recognize because we are slowly losing sight of the depths of African Culture, History and Spirituality. The oldest within ALL of Mankind.
I rest my case,
Torgbui (again)

Twi, which is the most spoken Akan language in Ghana, doesn't have the depth, scope and range needed to be a national language. Even languages like Hindi, which have a rich literature and well refined grammar, do struggle to express a lot of modern ideas and concepts. For example, how do express concepts such as particle physics in twi?
Furthermore, you have other widely spoken languages such as Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, Gurunne, Wale, Gonja, and so forth. Should all these be made national languages? And to what end?
Like it or not, we can no longer shake off our colonial past by mere wishful thinking. The history of how Ghana became a multi-ethnic nation has English as a heritage at the centre.

Kwaku Manu is too simplistic in his approach to solving Ghana's underdevelopment. English language cannot be blamed for Ghana's lack of development. Poor education is the the cause of all underdevelopment in every country. We must develop all our regional languages. In addition to English language, we must teach Twi in all the Akan regions. Ga in Greater Accra. Ewe in the Volta Region etc. Trying to foist Twi on all us is wrong. Ghana is made up of 10 regions. We must value all our languages and stop trying to turn Ghana into a twi speaking country.

Watchman, what Kwaku is saying is simple. One national language is good for Ghana. All great nations the world over, have one national language even though there may be other shades of language in existence. Great nations, as a policy, decide to choose one local language that can be spoken by a majority of its people and make the language a national language. Kwaku has touched on a topic that has been on my mind for a long time and i'm happy learn that there are people like Kwaku, in Ghana, who think outside the box and challenge the status quo. I wish some politician will take this matter up and engage the country in an honest and civil debate on the issue. Kwaku has, for sure, set the national language debate wheel in motion and we must all do our part to make sure that something better comes out of it. Somebody must take this to the floor of the parliament.

Where has the big big English taken us to? Our accent in Ghana is so heavy, and when we travel outside Europeans and Americans can not even understand what we are saying. It takes some time for you to adjust and speak for people to understand you properly. In Ghana, we think we can speak English very well and mock those who cannot speak it. Travel outside and hear for yourself how you sound whilst speaking English. Let's stick more to our local dialects and use the English for interaction with the outside world and for commerce. African countries have a peculiarly complex situation concerning the use of local languages for official business because they are too many. In Ghana alone, we have about 40 indigenous languages; Nigeria has over 240.
It is therefore a big confusion looking for which of these languages to adopt as a lingua franca. For instance, of those who can speak Akan, which is obviously the most widely spoken language in Ghana, an overwhelming majority cannot read and write it because they did not learn it in school. In fact, no Ghanaian language qualifies as a lingua franca because only a tiny percentage of those who can speak it can read and write it. Worse of all, there are not sufficient varieties of written books to meet the country's needs at all levels of education. Besides, there are not enough qualified teachers to teach at all of our schools.
Unlike our local languages, English is read and spoken by all of our people who pass through our school education. Literacy in it cuts fairly across the entire country and the depth of literature andcteachers available in it is not comparable with that of any of our local languages.
Replacing English with any local language would rather retard our development as a country. Let us instead increase the literacy rate among our people.

I salute you Kweku Manu , a good one there! you have said all. majority of intelligent Ghanaians are not contributing to nation building just because of the English language, even when you tried to contribute with the little English you know the masters of the English language will be quick to descend heavily on you to let you know that your English is bad , meanwhile they can't even manufacture common "challewatte" with it. our strength lies in our culture, and culture is a way of doing things so if you allowed someone to kill your culture and twists your tongue then you're doomed for ever. I pity Ghanaians all the struggles will amount to nothing because we have funny scholars.

Unclefi, you better retract your statement because going to school do not necessary means you are to learn English language.
Foreign born kids who are not in English speaking countries do study in the languages of the countries they are born into. I have three relatives with their kids in Germany, Italy and Russia and these kids cant speak English language, yet they are exceptionally good in their field of study with their respective countries language which is their native or 1st language.
Do you know why the first missionaries took the pains to translate the Bible into various languages around the globe wherever they went but did not force the natives to learn it in English language? They knew that it would be very cumbersome to teach them in a foreign language for them to understand it quickly hence they learnt the native language and had the Bible translated into native languages in the early '50s. Languages are easily learnt when you live among the natives than what is taught in schools.
Many foreign graduates from universities in their native countries struggle with the English language when they set foot in UK and America. Hardly a foreign graduate would gain admission into American University to pursue his field of study without going through the hassles of the English language. That alone may take you about 2 to 3 years depending on your efforts.
You know what the Chinese and other nations are doing? We call something like "intellectual piracy". What they do is they buy up to date text books in English language and engage the services of their highly trained intellectuals who are proficient in the English language to translate them into Chinese language where students are able to learn with easy and understanding in their native language.
Should we sit down as irresponsible people and fight over this simple issue which Mr. Manu has raised, believe you and me, had it been reality for we to die and come back again, we will come and see the country in more backwards than this very time. You know what, presently we do not have qualified teachers in our schools and what they are imparting to the kids are mere crap. Yes it is time to choose a language which majority are able to express themselves in as our first national language.
