If they gave their consent or their families did, then no question. If not, then the organizers could be treading on dangerous grounds.

This is beyond wickedness! These people do not have the mental capacity to consent to this shameful display which amount to exploitation and human rights abuse! There is a reason why no other civilized nation do this!

Oh Ghana, what is so great about exploiting mental illness? Will you also have a contest for those suffering from terminal illness such as cancer and then crown them 'Mr. & Miss Cancer'? Its another thing to make awareness for mental illness but to go to such length in order to prove a point is just sad.

Be careful with your choice of word…the word 'mad' is demeaning and very harsh....the right thing to say is 'mentally challenged'

As a mental health practitioner I feel this is not the right way to fight the stigma. The objective should be to find acceptance within the society/family and to send message out that mental health shouldn't render someone as obsolete.
In this regard competitions should be based on creativity by putting their skills at display e.g art competition, farming, gardening or other creative works and the best awarded.
Most of the mental health patients have got skills and is about engaging them in treatment to bring the best out of them. Their creativity is the one which would change perception and not the beauty. Real beauty is from the heart.
