1. Payola originated from the producers and not DJ's. When private radio begun in Ghana, it was the producers who "tipped" DJs to play their music in place of the foreign music libraries. To fix this "anomaly", producers should negotiate with the radio stations on a fixed rate or eliminate any payments. By eliminating any payments, radio stations will have access to new releases without paying for broadcasting fees. A win-win for everyone.
2. Ghanaians and every human being for that matter is innately tuned to "sharing". If copyright had its full application, then the very act of telling someone anything would be a violation of copyright. In essence, copyright is terrible in how it has been implemented in Ghana and the rest of the world.
3. Music is an artform and commericialisation is only a recent activity which CANNOT trump the sharing systems in Ghana. Unless copyright is adjusted to "suit" the society, it will ultimately fail. For example, Ghana can adopt a sharing medium which encourages free mass distribution with some sort of advertisement. Be creative! It is inaccurate to think that sharing is piracy. Stop using such words. Somali pirates are pirates. Copying a CD is not piracy. Copying is tied to sharing. Look into other types of legislation such as COPYLEFT, CREATIVE COMMONS ATTRIBUTION and other such systems.
4. Think of artistes performing on stage as one of the alternatives. People hear an artiste on the radio and see his/her music video THEN, they pay a ticket to come see that artiste at a show. That is how artistes make money. The CDs and other such are like "business cards".
5. Finally, stop spending ridiculous amounts of money on expensive suits, gas-guzzling cars and other immature products and you will see a lot of your money. That is to say: save your money.
Use the Swedish model. The great ABBA band members ride bicycles. Will you ride a bicycle?

I was a producer for 5 years and quit because it was a simple throwaway of my precious dough. Most Ghanaians will not purchase a music CD, and several others don't own a CD player and therefore will not buy. Music production in Ghana is more a hobby than a business because there is no real income to be generated from it except the supporting actors who get paid to complete the finished product and not those spending their good cash. The DJ's are simply disgusting because most of them have their own select artists that they manage and some would even go as far as sabotage play of good music.

I agree with you broda. Most Ghanaians simply cannot shell out so much money to buy 1 music cd. The pricing is wrong because producers put all their profit on the single cd. The average empty cd is about 30cents, so if the or ... read full comment

The average empty cd is about 30cents, so if the ordinary man has to shell out 10USD for a cd, there is no way. And Obeserver is right. I have never owned a CD player and so many people don't either.

It is the DJ's job to find the appropirate time, radio show and the perfect slot to get people interested in your musician. Payola is part of the music business. Pay the DJ! and get your song on the air or find another job.
