I rather respect actors who don't take any silly role that comes their way just because they want to appear in movies or make money. In this regard, I respect what Lydia Forson is saying (although I don't know her and cannot judge her true character).
It is all too common to see fine actors accept roles that simply don't suit their character, personality and intellect. I have seen some young and fine actors gradually degenerate into silly actors just because they are not wise enough and bold or assertive enough to SAY NO to any role.
Perhaps our Ghanaian (and other African actors) should read Sydney Poiteir's autobiography and they will learn a lot about how to become great as an actor without stooping low. Learning to be yourself. My respect for the man has grown since reading his memoirs in which he makes you see what a remarkable man he is coming from very humble beginnings in the Bahamas.
If you happen to watch "Guess who's coming to Dinner (1963)", and "To Sir with Love" among others, you will begin to appreciate what a trend-setter Poitier was, and how his assertiveness and his wopnderful portrayals in these movies helped pave the way for the likes today of Denzel Washington, Cuba Gooding, Forrester, Wishburn, Samuel L Jackson and other fantastic black actors, not to mention Whoopi Goldberg, Haille Berry etc. from the female side.
In the 1950s and 1960s at the height of the civil rights movement and the struggle for "black" emancipation in America and most of the world, Poitier in "Guess who's coming to dinner" played the role of an eminent medical doctor and graduate of Princeton working with the WHO who had fallen in love with a "White" girl whose parents were renowned for their liberal stance and their belief in "equality" etc. which they had taught her.
The reality was quite different when she showed up with him at their home to celebrate their "engagement". Quite apart from the high drama and the beautiful portrayals on all sides (including Poitirer's own "parents", there was much more to that movie. It set a tone about the ability of the black person, his confidence, assertivenss, intelligence and above all being equal to everyone else. One of the worries of the parents of his fiancee was -"how will people treat your children"? to which their daughter replied, "Oh, our first one will be a girl and she will be fine. She may even become the president of the United States"!!!
As if a prophesy, at the time when that movie was made and when that utterance was being made, somewhere not too far away in Hawaii, a Kenyan man had just had a baby boy with a young (18 year old) white girl whose parents and the entire community resented (and almost rejected) the whole affair. Little did we know, and in case you have not yet figured out and put the two stories together, 43 years later, that "mixed race boy" born at the time when Sydney Poitier played "Dr Prentice" in "Guess who's coming to Dinner", became the first "black" president of the United States of America. He is the 42nd and 43rd president of the US and his name is BARACK OBAMA!!!
My simple point is this: Poitier REFUSED to play roles that either demeaned, degraded or portrayed an inferiority in him as the condition of the black man. He turned down many film roles simply because he wanted to be himself. If Lydia Forson has decided to assert herself in that way and to focus her career in making movies that really count and that will become classics (like Guess who's coming to dinner) and give her her stature in the movie industry, who cares about what others say of her, be they film makers, producers or directors! To me she is perfectly entitled to her stance and yes, respect is EARNED and "cuts both ways". Good luck to her.
If film directors, producers and what have you think they "made her" or wish to say, either you do it our way or ytou don't make a movie, then fine, but Ms Forson, please stick to you guns. It may be painful at times, but your dignity, integrity and standing are more important than any cheap movie, however much anyone wishes to pay you for it. I salute you!

Pursue your dreams my dear.
Lydia, keep it up, my role model/mentor.
