Fashion Meets Compassion
Local designer Afua Sam grew up in poverty in Ghana. When her father died and her mother began to work full-time, fashion became Afua's escape. Now Afua wants to help other women find a better way of life -- through fashion. Her colorful designs reflect the sun-drenched landscape of Africa, and will be featured in an upcoming fashion event to benefit local women and children.
Dejha Bower, the organizer of the Fashion Fusion show is excited to be showcasing Afua's work. "There is a hot fashion scene here and you're definitely going to see this," explained Bower.
Fashion Fusion will feature the original designs of seven local, independent designers. Dejha hopes to use the glitz and glamour of the fashion industry to help some of DC's most challenged neighborhoods.
"One in three families headed by single mothers is in poverty and that blows my mind. It's important that we get involved and make a difference," said Bower. One place that will benefit directly is FLY -- Facilitating Leadership in Youth. FLY offers after school programs and tutoring to help keep DC area kids on the right track in the classroom and the community. Tawaanda Davis, one of FLY's young leaders, says the program helped her win the scholarships she needed to afford college.
"[In my neighborhood] there's not a lot of people that have graduated from high school," said Tawaanda. "I see it as an opportunity to give back to my community, I can prove them wrong."
