Asante-Akim South Assembly fails to elect PM

The Asante-Akim South District Assembly failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM) after three rounds of voting supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Neither of the two men, who had put themselves up for election to that office - Mr. John Kennedy Agbesi, the immediate past PM, nor his challenger, Nana Albert Osei Asiamah, an educationist, could garner the mandatory two-thirds majority votes.

To be elected, the successful candidate required to secure the backing of least 45 members of the 69-member assembly.

Mr. Agbesi had 40 votes as against the 26 polled by Nana Asiamah and with no sign that the deadlock could be broken, there was no option but to indefinitely postpone the election.

Mr. Hayford Kyere, the District Coordinating Director, called for broader consultations to allow for the smooth election of a PM, at the assembly’s next sitting.
