Sammi Awuku provides update on Bawumia's running mate

Sammi Awuku, a key member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's campaign team, has disclosed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer will announce his running mate to the public in June, 3news.com reports.

Awuku is reported to have confirmed that Dr. Bawumia has chosen his running mate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

He dismissed suggestions that the vice president has been slow to announce his running mate, pointing out that it hasn't been long since his election as the flagbearer.

“We are very much within the timeline. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago, so we still have time. If you recall, his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August. So, for us in the NPP, we are very much within our timelines.

“It can be tomorrow, it can be next week, it can be next month, it can be three days from now. The flagbearer at this point is very clear in his mind who his running mate is going to be, and when he is ready, he is going to announce that,” 3news.com quoted him as having said.

Awuku also mentioned that Dr. Bawumia is currently focused on campaigning vigorously to face his main rival, John Dramani Mahama, in the elections.

"Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is up against John Mahama. They will be the candidates on the ballot, and we're familiar with both. Dr. Bawumia's real contest is with the former president," he added.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially unveiled its presidential running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, for the elections.

The general elections are scheduled for December 7, 2024.
