Two boxing bouts held in two so-called "Third World" countries are referred to differently with reference to the one fought in Africa imbued with stereotypical insinuations. The boxing bout challenged between Ali and Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire in 1974 was stereotypically referred to as 'Rumble in the Jungle'. Whereas the one between Ali and Frazier contested in 1975 in Manila was christened, 'Thriller in Manila'. Rumble in the Jungle just because the match took place on African soil? Referring to the Ali-Foreman boxing match in Africa as "Rumble in the Jungle" fed, and still feeds into the stereotypical view of Africa in the eyes of the Western world. Referring to Kinshasa as a jungle in 1974 was not appropriate, and it's inappropriate in 2016 and beyond to refer to Ghana or any other African country as jungle.

What clout, what say does Africa have in the world when its leaders are always begging them for crumbs?
People of the jungle cannot hunt and gather enough to feed themselves, yet their thieving, beggar-leaders live in stinking, aristocratic opulence surrounded by deprivation and squalor.

The point here is that the 'Rumble in the Jungle' was a historic event. So they are referring to this as the same for ease of reference to make sure everyone understands it will have the same magnitude as the first event! It's a 'Tribute to Muhammad Ali' and it's being planned to take place from Ghana. Surely we should be proud of that? The name will probably change so to go on about the geography of the place is petty. At the end of the day it will showcase Ghana and Africa and be a huge event taking place in Ghana. The name of the event will undoubtedly change to include something like 'Africans Unite' or something..... who knows? They will come up with something creative! 'Rumble in Africa' is not a bad idea.

Minister of Sports, are you stupid to allow Ghana to be branded a jungle? Or is it because you've got your cut, you'll allow criminal Don King to dishonor Ghana. Why did all the African sports ministers unanimously choose Ghana? Simple answer: Because Ghanaian politicians will go for anything that will put money in their pockets. Big shame, you're guys are very corrupt.

this is so ridiculous! No one is branding Ghana as a jungle! The historic event 'Rumble in the Jungle' was a massive moment in boxing history, sport history and visibility of Africa and African issues. Muhammad Ali is a world figure loved all around the world. He died a couple of weeks ago and Africa wants to honour him and host a boxing and entertainment event that will be shown all around the world. ghana had a strong link with Muhammad Ali and with the African American's struggle for civil rights. If Ghana holds this event it's like holding the world cup on the soil of Ghana. The title of the event is irrelevant.Instead of welcoming Ali's family and Don King and celebrities here to celebrate the country and its history and its talented youth and sportsmen and entertainers, there's a stupid debate about the title. No wonder nothing big or good every happens in Ghana. When was the last time Ghana hosted anything?

The funeral in the states showed hoe much global respect there is for Ali. its such a positive no brained but on ceasing ghana will lose out because the country can't come together to embrace anything positive or imaginative. too bad for ghana! watch it go to some other African country and once again well be sitting here saying 'ah! We could have: we should have !!' as for the title of the old event being used as a reference point that ismno reason why the event should be rejected based on that! of course it would have a new name!!! how ridiculous to look down on such a massive opportunity!!

It was just a promotional slogan of the day: the heady, apogee days of Muhammad Ali's proclivity for poetry.
Who did not love Ali's poetry and rhymes of those days?
They were beautiful.
And since the whole equatorial belt is generally forested, "jungle" became the great promotional tool, with Ali's rhythmic pronouncements in tow.
Of course, the West knows we have towns and cities, but because of that geographical fact and a rhyme needed in the spirit of Ali, it did not - and still does not - bother me much.
To me, even though it might have been motivated by negative stereotype, the real drive was the need for a rhyme, as Ali would love it.
Mobutu, King, Ali, Foreman and their black hangers-on did not protest, so obviously they did not see it as insulting.
This would have been Kwame Nkrumah's fight to host.
He would have loved to see his people come back home to stage the "Rumble in the Jungle".
I doubt that he would have protested, because the brothers in Accra, beaming Ghana live to the world, would have been more important to him than the slogan.
Look at the attention we got from the Clinton, Bush and Obama visits, and the pride we felt for being the focus of the world in a positive light.
So bring it on!
Let's have "Rumble in the Jungle II".
But are there any REALLY FAMOUS heavyweights today?
