Lawson secures controversial win over Prescott

Ghanaian Frederick Lawson remains undefeated after securing a controversial split decision win over Breidis Prescott in a Welterweight contest on Thursday night.

Lawson won on the scorecards 95-94, 95-94 and 93-96 with crucially a third-round slip from Prescott being counted as a knockdown in the bout staged in Hialeah, Florida.

The 31-year-old Colombian had dominated the early stages of the fight until his third-round slip after a punch to the back of his head.

It was counted as a knockdown despite replays clearly showing it was a genuine slip.

That factored into the scorecards, was vital in securing the win for Lawson who preserves his undefeated record after 24 fights in his professional career.

Prescott who had looked good in the opening rounds was however not helped by the incompetence of his corner.

The swelling on both his eyes got even bigger as the fight progressed with the seconds found culpable even in the proper use of an Enswell.

The win for Lawson now enhances his chances of getting a World Title shot probably by the end of the year or early next year.
